Rogers Increases Outside of Canada Text Message Rates

Number 9 folks! We are up to number 9 in the Rogers pain train (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Effective July 7, 2009, Rogers Wireless will be increasing the rate for sending text messages when you are outside of Canada from $0.60 per message to $0.75 per message.

Please Note: The changes below affect all customers.

The current rate per text messaging when you are outside of Canada (using another cellular network) is $0.60 per message (incoming/outgoing). As of July 7, 2009, that rate will now be $0.75 per message (incoming/outgoing).

If you have an international or USA text message plans, it matters not, because those text message packages only cover messages that you send from within Canada to outside of Canada destinations.

A big solid FU! to Rogers.

Their last change in US texting policies caused my bill to skyrocket. This is even worse...

I don't travel to the US enough to justify a US texting plan, but just enough for it to screw me when I do go down there.

Given how Rogers treats it's customers, when they do have to start being more competitive, I bet they make the new plans unavailable for anyone on a current contract.

They can only raise prices so much before they realize that people are only coming to them because of the handsets.

Once the competition comes in with the same handsets and cheaper deals — I think Roger's will get a little wake up call.

I work for Telus and I hope they don't do the same. So far with any sms bundle sending/receiving to/from the US is included in the package. Intl sms sent is either 25c if w/o a bundle OR 10c w/. Like I said the only reason I'm with Fido is bcz of the iPhone. There is talk amongst LNR and Client Care about:
1. HSPA/LTE coming as early as fall.
2. iPhone possibly coming, if not hey that's what ultrasn0w was for right?

TELUS data speeds suck now but you guys just wait for LTE.

Wow, I had no idea texting in the US was so expensive... What if you're traveling and someone sends you a text that you don't even want to read? Say a friend that doesn't know you're out of the country... Do you get a 75 cent charge every time that happens?

I should have invested in the cell phone monopoly years ago. Seems like Canadas cash cow for the time being. They can litterally charge whatever they want and we're slaves to that.

Great. What else is new w/Rogers? Pretty lamecore. I'm going to Seattle in September, so, guess I can look forward to even further price gouging if I need to send some SMSes while I'm down there. Good thing the event I'm going to will have wifi net access all throughout...

It's all really too bad.. I think my iPhone would be of great use during my travels to the states but I think for the safety of my bank account I will be leaving it at home or turning it off when I travel south of the border....

I had US Text Messaging plan when I went South. It gave me 15 sent/month for $7 and reduced the cost of extra sent texts to $0.35. Even that ran up a bill of $52 during my 8-day trip!

For the poster who asked, there is still no charge for received texts if you have a messaging plan, even if you're stateside.

That's one thing i miss about Telus, the only thing I miss. Texting to and from, no matter where I was in Canada/usa was free, and europe was 10c. Fido it's way more, because of that I don't do it. As for roaming in the states I have a different sim card I can use in another phone until I can unlock.

Do customers with existing plans have grandfathered rates with Rogers & Fido? If not, does this change qualify as material enough to cancel are contracts? Any insight would be appreciated.

Your existing plan remains unchanged, these are 'new' plans. If you wanted to change plans, these would be the options available.

Guys, I hate to be a pessimist, but I can't see competition changing much. Look at Bell/Telus with their incoming TXT message charges. What does Rogers do? Follow suit! Rather than act as buffers for each other, they just give each other ideas on how to screw us.

Unless there is a large influx of competition, I don't see one extra carrier making any difference. The CRTC should have never allowed the Rogers/Fido buyout.

I think it's because of Rogers' investors that demand more profits for their own pockets. If investors didn't have a decision in the company, Rogers would most likely lower the price.
