Oh, and if you wanted to go to Europe and put in a different SIM card, you'd be out of luck. The iPhone will be locked at the hardware level, in the same way as any other GSM phone.

This part is really nothing Apple-specific either... The "activation" stuff adds a second level, but the SIM lock works the same as it does for any other phone Rogers sells. NONE of them can be used with non-Rogers SIM cards without getting them unlocked.

For the record, the current iPhone v1.0 in it's normal state also requires "re-activation" each time you change SIM cards -- unless you've unlocked it of course.

With AT&T, if you had legitimately swapped out your SIM card (ie, AT&T had sent you a new one), this activation simply occurred automatically the next time you connected the device to iTunes yourself -- no visit to an AT&T or Apple Store was required.

If you inserted a non-AT&T SIM card (or a non-AT&T iPhone SIM card, based on the IMEI numbers in Apple's database), you would be told the phone could not be activated. If you inserted an inactive AT&T SIM card, you would be taken through the sign-up process again online.

Presumably, since Rogers is using an "Activation-only" version of iTunes (which really seems to be a normal full-fledged iTunes application with some activation code thrown in and a parameter to prevent any normal iTunes sync operations -- hence activation only), the same would apply to using your normal copy of iTunes 7.7 at home when changing SIM cards.

Whether iTunes will simply check for a valId Rogers SIM card or whether it will check to confirm that there is an account in place for that SIM card remains to be seen, but this may not be as onerous a process as we fear. Chances are it will just make sure any SIM card you insert is active on a Rogers account of some form, and possibly take you through a Rogers account sign-up process if not (assuming Apple will have even bothered to implement such a thing) or tell you to call Rogers to get your SIM card activated for an account/plan.
