Rogers/Fido 6GB Data Plan Ends on September 30th

by Gary on September 24th, 2008

If you’re using the iPhone 3G on Rogers or Fido, most likely you are on the 6GB/$30 smartphone data plan. This plan was supposed to expire at the end of August but it was extended to the end of September. After analyzing my data usage over the past couple of months, I have come to the conclusion that exceeding the 6GB data cap is going to be next to impossible unless I’m tethering the iPhone 3G for internet, or streaming online radio 24/7 (I know some of you guys are music junkies out there).

Anyways, if you recall, I did post some breaking news regarding new data plans coming on October 1st. These plans were leaked to me from a very reliable source, with close ties to the Rogers empire. Let’s also remember the new data plans that will be announced too. How does 500MB for $25 sound? :)

If you’re on the fence about getting an iPhone 3G, maybe it’s time to decide now since this 6GB plan is THE data plan. Tethering is possible through Netshare and iPhone Modem (posts coming soon!). However at this point in time it’d be interesting to see if Rogers can detect it, even through a proxy. Regardless, the peace of mind knowing that you won’t exceed your data plan is what we are all looking for. There’s nothing worse than constantly tracking data usage. I like to surf, stream radio, stream live videos with QIK, and use data freely and frivolously!

September 30th is around the corner so if you haven’t added the 6GB data plan to your account, you better do so quickly. Here’s a breakdown of my data usage from August 12 to September 12th.

Yes, I know I need to use more data. Currently I only use 3G and have turned off WiFi to see how much data I can consume. I’ll let you know my results next month!

6GB Data Usage Contest

This will get very interesting. If you have used up to 6GB of data in one month and send me a screenshot to prove it (please, no photoshopped entries), you will win a MYSTERY PRIZE (ooooh! how exciting)! The first person to do will be a lucky winner of a free iPhone 3G accessory! Good luck!! Spread the word and email this contest to your friends! LOL!

How much data have you used in one month so far? Over 1GB? 2GB? 3GB+?!

Just wanted to add that I work for Rogers and reading the comments above I've got a few things to point out...

    1. Look in your contracts (if you got a full copy). All 3G Rogers data plans INCLUDE tethering. So plug it in, use PdaNet all you want. You can tether to your hearts content, it won't cost you a penny more until you hit 6GB.

    2. Rogers Data plans are a separate contract. However, Rogers policy is that "All voice and data contracts must terminate at the same time" So basically, if you renew your data, your voice should be renewed and vice-versa. BUT, that is not done automatically, so it depends on the CSR you get when you call/go in to change it.

    3. Lastly, the 17.50 EPP may be a steal, but Rogers offers much better plans. For example... Rogers Retention plan $20:

    250 Weekday
    Unlimited Evenings and Weekends
    Includes call display.

Sure, it doesn't sound that great off the top. BUT, when you call in to complain and get switched to that plan (through retention only) They will also give you whatever add-ons you have for free and credit you for the call display if you're already paying for it in your $15 iphone pack.

So basically, switch yourself to a Rogers to Rogers plan, add incoming calling, 6pm evenings... and then you get: (make sure you switch first so that you already have these options when you call Retention)

$15 ($20 minus $5 credit for call display)
    250 weekday
unlimited evenings and weekends at 6pm
unlimited Rogers to Rogers calling (shows as $5 charge plus $5 credit)
Unlimited incoming calling (shows as $10 charge plus $10 credit)

add $30 data and $15 iphone pack and for $60 bucks a month (before tax and fees) you get pretty well unlimited everything!!!

    Hope that helps you all!!

    Hi,
I purchased a iPhone from ebay lots of months ago even befor it was sold here in Canada. I don"t have an internet plan because Fido has told me since I don't have a Canadian version that ther would be some excess charge to my account, so I said No to internet plan. I use the Wifi at home and at work to have access to the internet. Yesterday the September 29 2008 I received a phone call from Fido saying that I have a 1,500.00$ internet bill for this month. So I said WHAT! I replied to the lady taht I don't have a package fee for the internet and never applied for it. And she also said that my iPhone is picking up internet. So I said to her unplug the internet on my iphone I don't want any of it and she said that it can't be done......
    Help what can I do!

    Jean
  • Call Fido to block your data.
  • philmcneal
damn fags, 1 week ago it was just paying for the iphone and then renewing your contract for another 3 years

then yesterday its a 60 dollar administration fee

now today its a 80 dollar administration fee

    fuck you fido
  • sylvainp
Check on your invoices for the real data usage.

Last month my iphone (reseted the 1rst of the month) showed a little under a gigabyte and my invoce over 2 gigabytes.
  • John
Netshare looks like it isn't offered in the App Store and I can't find anything about iPhone Modem. Do you have to have a jailbroken phone to use those apps?
  • Justin
yes. you need a jailbroken iPhone to use it.
  • dannymalt
I will never get to 6GB. I will gladly get the 500MB plan, but I am not going to pay $25 for it, when for $5 more I get 6GB. Rogers just screwing over the customer. Sell me 500mb of data for $10-$15 or something. I hate being screwed over.
  • Peter
I so far in half a month have used approx. 1.3gb, haha i use it a lot at school and home with wifi off so that explains it....i'll keep trying to get higher..ever since rogers screwed us over with their plan before the 6gb i want to screw them over by getting ever mb that i pay for. Who's with me? =)
  • Mike
6GB plans is lots, but it gives us flexibility in the future when new apps come out. Torrents on your iphone anyone?
  • Chris
I have an expired voice plan with Rogers and was thinking about getting the 6GB data plan, but in talking to a Rogers (Retentions) CSR rep today, he said if I get the data plan it will also extend my voice plan to 3 years. Is this true? Anyone know how this works?
  • Nitar
lies, call back and talk to another csr. The data contract is separate from the voice. I would recommend you get a 3 year epp voice plan as well though, it's a steal.
  • James
ive had the phone since 8am on july 11th and ive only used 120MB total in the past 2.5months,i dont think ill ever hit 6gb in my entire 3yr contract :P,but ill try to get that 6GB,i love winning things
  • Nitar
I'm glad I got the plan, cause it's the best one in the whole world. And if a better plan comes along, I can always switch, but I'll still be on that pesky 3 year contract.
  • coop
Also, data roaming in the US on the 6Gig plan is pretty cheap. It's a silly small charge per K that works out to $6 for 14MB. Without a data plan it would cost $3 per K.

The CSR didn't know if the cheap data roaming would be the same on the other new data plans. She said it might, but wasn't sure.

Are you also going to cover the Google' new HTC Dream on this blog. It seems like a solid competition to iPhone, except that Canadians will probably not see it any time soon.
  • @N... see top of page where it says "iPhone in Canada.ca", not "HTC Dream in Canada.ca"!!! :-D I'm sure someone somewhere will start that blog!
  • mcgee
why would he cover a phone that isnt in canada or an iphone on iphoneincanada.ca? kind of stupid question eh? most people come to this site for info or help with iphones not on other crappy phones that the companies would like to think are as good as the iphone.
  • H Ross
I have had the iphone for 11 days and I've hit 1.7 GB sent, 15 MB received. It's really not difficult to hit the limit if you stream alot of video podcasts and use google earth. Also always being connected to 3G helps too.
  • coop
Of course, where I live, I can't even use my phone. I almost never see ROGERS in the top left corner, just No Signal, so I I don;t have much chance of hitting the limit.

Rogers says this isn't possible, because their maps show that there is signal in my area...
  • Time to move closer to the city? ;)
  • coop
    no - it's time for
Rogers to do something about that "system access fee" they are charging me...
  • Tethering would be the lame way to win this ;-) Real iPhone 3G users wouldn't tether to get to 6GB!!! :-)
  • Justin
I'm curious if even tether would reach 6gig per month on simply browsing and light download.
  • Honestly I don't think it's possible unless you're streaming online radio 24/7 or watching YouTube all day. But then the problem of battery life comes into play...
  • Justin
If someone would tether his/her iPhone, I think 6G might go fast depending what you download on your computer ;)
  • Those of you who plan to attempt to hit the 6GB mark... good luck! Remember, you'll need to be plugged in a lot to keep that battery charged. It'd be interesting to see how many battery charges are needed to burn through 6GB!! You know what would be handy to help... a Richard Solo iPhone 3G Battery Backup!! :-) I can smell the burning of the 6GB already!!!
  • haha...good point. 6GB of data transfer at 3G will require a lot of battery life! Your RS battery backups will come in handy!
  • tony
No you keep the plan it just won't be available to the public anymore.
  • Nutchos
I think we'll start to see an increase in usage as more apps come out in the future (video streaming, live tv, etc). 6gb is more than enough though and should provide enough head room to never have to worry about data overages.

Also didn't rogers say they were ok with tethering a while ago?
  • They had mentioned it in a CBC article I think, however we all know how Rogers always flip flops and ends up screwing the consumer...so I'd be very careful just in case. Imagine if you tethered a tonne of data, they found out, and charged you. DONE like dinner!
  • iJoe
This probably has come up before, but...
Can I sign up for the 6G data plan with my first gen iPhone?
  • Yes you can get this plan on the 2G iPhone. I actually had it for a month before I got my 3G (after the EPP came back). Anyway, the deal on that is it's a separate contract from your voice plan and has a ECF of $20 or $5/mo to a max of $100, whichever is greater. Personally I think the $100 DECF is negligible as far as cancellation fees go, and if I were you I'd make sure to get the plan right now while you still can.
  • Andrew
you can only get the plan with a 3 year contract so if you don't have a contract and want this plan then just get an 8GB iphone 3G get the plan then sell the 3G on ebay for like 800 dollars:P
  • Corey
I used a grand total of 137022.00 And I thought I was almost at the limit lol. Anyways... I have a question.

When you already have that plan, does it go away at the end of Sept? OR does it keep going on but you just can't GET it after then?
  • You won't be able to get the plan after Sept 30th.
  • SSK13
This is bullshit...if they can offer 6GB for $30 why can't they just offer 500 MB for $3-5. I pay less a month for high speed internet at home geez...
  • I hit 987mb I think last month, will go for 6gb this month
  • Please go for it! That means averaging at least 200MB/day...haha
