Fido changed the policy again--you have to be 30 months into your 3 year plan!

I went to an Apple store on Sept 28th 2009 to try and buy an iPhone 3GS and switch to a smartphone plan from a regular phone plan. A sales rep for Fido was at the store. She checked my account and informed me that I was only 23 months into my 3 year contract. I thought I would just have to wait 1 more month. But NO! I have to wait 7 more months before I can purchase an iPhone at the discounted price. You are supposed to be within 6 months to the expiration of your contract to be eligible for phone discounts with a contract renewal.

The only option she offered me was to pay the full price for the iPhone, or other smartphone, and switch over to a smartphone plan without any hardware discounts. If I wanted to leave Fido, I would be penalized $20/month and have to payout the monthly fee for the remainder of the contract term.

I tried to reason with her, and suggest that we renew my contract early on a smartphone plan, and extend the contract by 7 months over the 3 year renewal term. She said that she doesn't have the authority to make such adjustments.

Makes no sense! I am willing to pay more per month by moving to a smartphone plan from a standard phone plan, and I am willing to extend my contract by 7 months to cover the time variance. Fido would be making more money from me, but they say "no". Not only are they losing the extra money they would make from me, but they are pissing me off enough to make me voice my frustration on the internet. They are so stupid. I am also stupid for even trying to reason with them.

What makes it a "contract" when the other party can change whatever they want, whenever they want? Am I in some feudal system where Fido is the lord?

If you are trying to decide between phone carriers, do not choose Fido!

The thing i dont understand is everyone saying that they 'can't wait' to leave or switch or otherwise get out of contract, but have you really looked at what telus and bell are offering? They really aren't any better. One word for you "Collusion"

Not true.

If you start a 3 year term for example, and do not take a phone at
that time, you must wait 2 years to get one via the upgrade program
