iPod Touch To Receive FaceTime In Fall 2010

One of the major new features of the iPhone 4 is FaceTime, which is Apple’s answer to video calling. Currently, FaceTime can only be used between iPhone 4 devices and the devices must be on a WiFi network (in other words, not the cellular network).

Last week, iPadinCanada reported on how the iPad would receive FaceTime by including a front-facing camera. Internal iOS SDK images were found clearly showcasing the ability for an iPad to connect to FaceTime calls using an Apple ID.

This week, 9To5Mac has found additional evidence of FaceTime, but this time for the iPod touch. Up first is the way users will log in.

Logging in for FaceTime is done by using the user email address that is tied to an Apple ID.

If users do not have an Apple ID, they will be able to create one for FaceTime. This is similar to creating an iTunes account on the iPhone/iPod touch.

Users can also remove their FaceTime account if needed.

Lastly, the following image seems to be what the FaceTime icon in the Settings app will look like.

So by Fall 2010, the iPod touch will have a front-facing camera, the iPhone already has a front-facing camera, and the iPad will probably have a front-facing camera by Spring 2011.

With so many iDevices out there, there is a high probability that many users will begin to use FaceTime as a primary method for communication. In other words, there will be less dependence on the Canadian wireless carriers (less minutes, more FaceTime)!

What do you think? Will FaceTime become a primary communication tool for you instead of using your wireless carrier minutes?

  • So when is this coming? This fall or by late 2011? I want to get an ipod for my brother. Should I get one now or wait?

Do you really want everyone to see you when you are talking to them? And you to see them?

I can see how this is fun for some to see what's happening, but in most of the phone conversations I have, I'm really really happy NOT to see the other person (and for the other person not to see me)

Plus, the fact that this is not working over cellular will make it even less attractive (IMHO)

Anyhow, I still look forward to seeing what else they can pull out of their hat for next year's iphone/ipad/itouch 😉

I for one use video chat all the time, so I'm excited to give FaceTime a try!….I wonder if Apple will decide to eventually rename iChat to FaceTime?

The idea of FaceTime is a awesome idea, and I would love to take part in it. Then my mind changes to the dark true of today's times. Patents buying their kids iPods for music, to find out your daughter is chatting with other boys using her cam. With a computer patents can place it in the living room were they can keep an eye on their kids which I think is a great idea, but how do you do that with a portable device that's going EVERYWARE in your pocket… Kinda scares me a little

I know this has been talked about a bit already, but I know a lot of even younger kids get iPods, not Phones.

I'm interested in what you all think. A real issue? Or water under the bridge?

i dont want my gf to see that i have a girl over who's being quit for the duration of the call, or my parents calling & seeing how messy my new place is & all the smokin paraphernalia around my desk! or my friend calling on a hot summer day where am chilin in my boxers all day!
i think i would b using fring over 3G for “facetime” rather than apples facetime app. that way i know what brand to buy from the grocery store 😀

If they combine it with iChat or make an OSX app for Face Time the chance of success will be greater!

Most likely the fall, ready for the Christmas season. If you can wait, do it.

Haha, imagine them “using the washroom”.

  • I'm hoping this is true, and if it is my boyfriend will be getting a shiny new iPod Touch for Christmas 🙂

Primary tool of communication? ROFL good one.

  • JonnyDub

Good point. I can actually see that happening…

  • No, because if you look like shit, your not going to want to FaceTime with someone :/
