Apple Announces 1.7 Million iPhone 4 Units Sold In 3 Days

This morning, Apple announced sales of over 1.7 million iPhone 4 units through Saturday June 26, which covers the first three days of sales since the iPhone 4 launch on June 24.

The new iPhone 4 features FaceTime, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, and Apple’s new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video.

“This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”

In the past, both of the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G had sales of over one million units for their launch weekends. The original iPhone, launched in 2007, took 74 days to sell one million units, which is a sharp contrast to the present day sales.

For additional comparison, in April Apple launched the iPad in the USA. The iPad took Apple 28 days to sell 1 million units, 59 days to sell 2 million units and 80 days to sell 3 million units.

June 24 marked the initial launch period for iPhone 4 in the United States, UK, France, Germany, and Japan. As indicated during the WWDC 2010 keynote, an additional 18 countries, including Canada, will receive iPhone 4 by the end of July.

    Why isn't it July yet!?!?!?!?!

Apple should “Hold Different” thos sales #s hehehe

  • Gtasscarlo

And they sold 1.7 million with all those defects what are americans retarded, I wouldn't dish out that much loot and haveto hold it differently I would return it, plus there's alwAys some new shit in the new next iPhone so I'll stick with the 3gs

Sometimes people don't have their priorities straight, but then again, these could be young people with money to burn. The 3GS is a good upgrade both for people who are going from 3G – only if you're going with a contract. Buying it outright will be too much money to throw away IMHO – unless you're going to keep it for a few years. In reality though, who can't resist new toys each year?

I read on a forum site that the release of the iPhone 4 in Canada is rumoured to be July 11th. Which doesn't sound right because it's a Sunday. The guy who wrote said the his buddy works at Rogers and confirmed it? Is it bull**it Ex?

  • If I recall correctly, the 3G when it came to Canada was released on July 11th…

The people who can resist new toys every year are the people who can't afford new toys every year, and Apple products are known to be overpriced, but hey, you have to pay for quality right?

  • Agree–the 3GS still does the job well. The iPhone 4 would be an incredible step up from the 3G, which is painfully slow even on 3.x firmware.

  • 3 more days…;)

  • Ex

There are two reasons why it is bull**it.

1.) Wireless carriers are the last, absolutely dead last to know.

2.) Apple will not launch a product on a Sunday.

On my 3G with iOS4, its not that slow. Granted there are some minor lag, but it appears to lagging if you have many mobile substrates. Currently, I only have LockInfo, and SBSettings.

What's your experience in painfully slow? I'm assuming you are referring to installing apps? The fast taskswitching is useable with the 3G, and it is of course limited by the amount of phsyical RAM installed. I'm enjoying the iOS4 on the 3G. The iPhone 4 would be a nice upgrade path, but waiting for the 'issues' to be addressed and waiting for Roots Tuffskin to come out for the iPhone 4 :). The Tuffskin really saved my 3G many times when it fell from the hip level.

  • Mike

how does that even remotely make sense?

  • My wife's 3G is slow when launching apps, and just using the iPhone OS. 3.x was slow and sluggish when typing, but 4.0 has been better. Using the 3G then jumping back to my 3GS, the differences are clearly noticeable.

When my friend who has a 3GS used my 3G to do something, he did say it was slow. I guess that the extra 200Mhz that the 3Gs has on the 3G 🙂 Once you're used to speed, there's no going back 🙂

I wonder if the stat covers pre-orders as well. then it really isn't “3 days”. All they really said was “through June 26th”
