HIDPI Images in Mountain Lion Suggest Retina Display Macs Coming

MacRumors is reporting that they have discovered HiDPI images already in use in OS X Lion beta version of the Messages app, suggesting that the next line of Macs could feature the super high resolution Retina Display.

In the image above, MacRumors points out that the avatar image on the left is much sharper than the one on the right. The left one running in HiDPI mode, and the one on the right running in regular mode. What else could these higher resolution images be fore, besides Retina Display Macs?

ArsTechnica reported that that double sized images have been found in the developer preview of Mountain Lion.

A source with access to the latest Mountain Lion preview alerted Ars that double-sized graphics have popped up in some unexpected places, once again suggesting that Apple may be close to releasing MacBooks with high pixel-density screens.

This seems like a natural progression to me, and is definitely a way for Apple to further compete with other laptops and desktops on the market. OS X Mountain Lion may fully support double “retina” images, when Apple shows off their new Mac line up later this year, hopefully with new HiDPI or Retina Displays on board.
