iPhone 3G S Contract Free Pricing: $699/$799 at Apple Retail Stores in Canada!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have some important news regarding how to buy the iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G! You can now purchase them at Apple Retail stores across Canada! You can setup a personal shopping appointment and ensure that you can get your hands on an iPhone 3G S on Friday at 8am (which is earlier than Rogers retail stores)!

iPhone 3G S Contract-Free Pricing Revealed on Apple.ca (Rogers, where are you?)

The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S will now be sold at Apple Retail stores. Their website reveals contract free pricing on iPhones that Rogers has failed to deliver, even though we’ve asked them politely. The funny thing is, the prices are tucked away in the grey colored footnotes, so they are hard to see.

Thanks to andrewe for the heads up!

8GB iPhone 3G – $599
16GB iPhone 3G S – $699
32GB iPhone 3G S – $799

Click below for the full sized picture:

Umm…yeah, so there you go. Take those contract-free prices at what they’re worth, and enjoy. Is it worth it to buy the iPhone 3G S outright, and avoid renewing to a max 3 year contract? Just think about possible GSM competition in a year or two…will you be able to switch if you’re still locked in? Food for thought!

Want to beat the rush to the Apple Store? You can also BOOK a Personal Shopping appointment and avoid the line up! Do it now before the time slots run out!

Some other interesting tidbits revealed it the footnotes:

Requires subscription to new 3-year term Rogers Wireless voice and data plan or new 3-year Fido Agreement with Data Option

So that means if you sign a new 3 year contract, you MUST have a voice and data plan. Before, people were able to buy the iPhone without a data plan.

Also, I was told earlier in the day that Fido.ca in their iPhone 3G S FAQ had contract free pricing posted. However, later on it was taken down mysteriously. How handy for customers who have been trying to find information all week huh?

So the big question remains: if you’re buying/upgrading the iPhone 3g S, where are you going to go to get your hands on one (aside from camping overnight outside a store)? Or is firmware 3.0 good enough for you?

I’m going to the same place I went last year….Fido kiosk @ Oakridge. They were smart enough to hand out numbers, first come first serve.

I made a Personal Shopping appointment @ the Apple Store in Pacific Center as a backup but the earliest I was able to get was 2pm. Doubt any phones will be left.
Fido better pull through for me.

I made an appointment at the Apple Store at Pacific Center for 4pm, but I might cancel if I can use my wife’s HUP to get a 3G S for cheaper than the outright pricing. Let the games begin!

Hahaha! Love the cat and mouse game between the customers and Rogers/Fido!
I would do the same but my GF is on Rogers (I’m on Fido) and I don’t want to be too greedy.

I told her save the HUP just in case she needs it down the road and I’ll just pay non-contract price. I managed to sell my 8gb 3G for $320 on eBay today. If I can use some Fido dollars as well that will make my weekend grand!

Are you going for 16GB or 32GB?

I’ll be getting up bright and early on friday and heading down to the rogers store and getting a new 32GB, With a new 3yr contract. 3.0 is great, but doesn’t have all the features that the 3G S does…

The thing is are the contract free 3Gs unlocked so I can use it with any carrier? I would imagine so since I’ve paid the full non-subsidized phone.

    Anyone can confirm this?

Im not going to pay the $800 for a 32GB because I need to sign up for the 6GB data plan and a smartphone plan which require 3 year contracts anyways. So why not take advantage of the $299 for 32GB and save myself some cash…. Yes its a 3 year contract but so is the 6GB data plan. I hope im doing the right thing…. lol Friday I sign my life away to Robbers for 3 years! :P

Is this valid if you already have an existing contract and an iPhone 3G? If not, what’s the point?

I’ll be lining up at the nearest Rogers Plus store. Hope to get a black 32GB 3GS. If white is only available and it’s 32GB I might accept that. Not getting the 16GB. I have too much music and movies to put on it. And yeah, getting the 6GB data plan too. Working for Rogers, I get a sweet deal on my plans. Still have to pay full price for the hardware though.

I don’t think that’s what was meant. The outright price isn’t tying your hands to a contract of any sort therefore they can charge a higher price.

The 3 year data plan is only for people who get the new iPhone at the subsidized price. If you sign up for a voiceplan on a contract, you must incorporate a data plan.

That’s my interpretation at least :)

So I think there is definitely some confusion in the poster’s haste to post this info.

In the screen shot and on the website, there is *NO* mention of the iPhone 3GS.

    Are these iPhone 3G Prices?

Is it possible that this is an old page from last year?

Is it also possible that you can only buy iPhone 3G at the Apple Store?

I urge everyone to look at the fine print one more time before reporting.

Those prices sound outrageous, but I recall paying over $600 for my 1st gen, 16GB iPhone, when they first came out. A fellow named “Rick” had a partner in the US, who was buying them, contract free, from the Apple Store, and shipping them up here. So, I guess, $699, for the 16GB 3G S, isn’t that unthinkable.

That being said, I’m really glad I qualify for the HUP!!

Just a quick note to those that set up appointments. When you make it does it specifically say for the iPhone 3GS? If so, then I don’t think you’ll have to worry about them not having any is stock. I would think they would hold it for you — although how would they know if you wanted the 16GB or 32GB? Ok, maybe I’m wrong.

The personal shopping appointments @ the Apple Store are split into 3 categories:

site is broken into 4 sections:

    Mac iPod AppleTV iPhone

They have an idea of what you’re looking forward already but believe me, 90% of those appointments on Friday are for 3G S. Noon maybe be too late; I had good luck @ Oakridge but any mall will do. They’ll probably have a lineup outside and hand out numbers so you can walk around while you wait. Just go early. Show up @ the mall @ 9:30am or better and you’ll be fine.

The price does sound outrageous but we have one advantage: creating your own subsidy by selling your 3G for a fair price.
When the 1st gen iPhone launched we didn’t have that option. Even a rough iPhone would fetch $200 on eBay.

If you take a look at the capacities, there is the 8GB iPhone 3G, then 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3G S. I know it doesn’t “mention” 3G S on the page, but there are no 32GB iPhone 3G’s. Yes, you can buy the 3G by itself at the Apple store. Read again. :)

So I’m one to think it’s better to upfront the xost of the phone and not have to worry about cancellation fees at the end (400 for voice, 100 for data, and 1 month cancellation fee) but my question is, what kinds of plans are available without signing up for a voice contract (and subsequently a data contract)? I would want both voice and data, just not the 3 year contract. 12 month would be fine. No contract- even better.

I booked my appointment at the Apple Store in the Eaton Center, dowtown Toronto, for 6pm tomorrow. I called the store to make sure that they would have sufficient supplies, which is when I found out from the employee that the Apple Store WILL NOT BE SELLING THE iPHONE 3G S OFF CONTRACT!!! If you are on contract, you will be forced to break that contract and start a new contract, WITH DATA! Don’t know where you guys got the info that the Apple Store would be selling these phones off contract. Please double check your sources.

iPhone 3GS is NOT being sold at the Apple Store off contract (at least not at the Apple Store in the Eaton Center in Toronto)!!! This article is wrong. You will be forced to sign a new 3-yr contract with data. Sorry to burst your bubbles.

I work at Best Buy, I checked the SKUs from BGR and I can confirm they are legit. The iPhone 3GS is gonna be 699/799 sadly. I was hoping got 599/699 like in the US.

And btw, I think Rogers/Fido aren’t revealing the prices because they want to avoid the backlash that happened last year when they announced the data plans. Those bastards…They want everyone to get in line and then say “surprise! the iPhone is gonna be expensive as hell!”. They won’t even post the prices 24 hours in advance so there is no time to complain.

If anyone can create a petition to have the same prices in the US? 599/699.

I don’t understand why people are so worried about unlocking lol. The dev team always find a way to unlock it and they already found a way to unlock the 3GS and it’s gonna be released at launch day. Who cares if it’s not “officialy” unlocked.

This makes no sense — if a 3-year plan is required, and it’s still carrier locked, what are you paying extra for? You’re getting exactly the same thing as what you’d get from Rogers or Fido, only you’re paying more than double.

    Exactly!

If someone could please direct me to the specific page on the Apple.ca website where the 3GS is listed for $699 and $799 (16GB and 32GB, respectively), I would be very thankful. From what I can tell, Apple Canada is NOT offering the phones at these price point.

    Hoping to be proven wrong…

Just called the Apple Store Yorkdale, there seems to be some confusion about no-contract pricing. When I first asked if they were available no-contract the representative said no, upon pressing she stated that I could buy the device outright at $699/$799 but i would still have to use rogers. The point being, if you say “no-contract” they sometimes think “unlocked” just letting you know, Yorkdale WILL be selling unsubsidizaed phones. See you guys there at 7am :P

Also, i booked an 11am appointment, will they hold a phone for me, or should i go in the morning to be sure?

I think that the Apple and Rogers employees are misinformed or really dumb or just want to hide the price until tomorrow. Seriously Rogers said there would be a no contract price for the iPhone 3GS. It explains itself NO CONTRACT. So maybe they are lying or something? And the screenshot says no commitment… What the hell are they playing.

Good luck selling your 3G for 600 bucks 1 day before the 3GS comes out. You’ll get max 500 if you are lucky. I managed to sell my 8GB for $400 but that was a week ago.

Weird… So what you’re saying is that the employee told you that you can buy the 3GS at the $699/$799 price points (as in, these price points actually exist at Apple Canada retail stores)? Then that must mean they’re being offered off contract. The rep I talked to said that for each iPhone Personal Appointment, every iPhone model will be made available to each individual with an appointment (in other words, inventory is being reserved for the appointments). So I’d say sleep in, and show up at 11am to buy it outright. AND, if you can post that you had success doing this, I’m sure we’d all appreciate that. P.

Would it be better to purchase the phone from Rogers or from the Apple store?

On the other post you stated that you could purchase the 32gb 3GS non-subsidized/ contract free from Rogers for $799, -OR- $699 if you were AT LEAST one year since you signed the contract. That would mean that everyone who bought a 3G from Rogers last year from July-Sept would be able to purchase a 32GB 3GS for $699 (in those months this year) without tapping into your handset upgrades.

So this means i can save a 100 bucks if i wait till at least the one year mark

I hope, correct me if i’m wrong

I just made an appointment for Friday to visit an Apple store in order to buy the 3Gs so I have a development unit for testing purposes.

I called the voice line after booking online to confirm that was all I needed to do. I was told that the Apple Stores were not yet authorized to sell units without contracts and that I might be wasting a trip downtown. I was told to phone again just before coming to the store in order to ensure that 1) they have phones in stock and 2) they are allowed to sell phones without contracts.

When I mentioned the apple.ca site has the pricing for no-contract phones online, he agreed. His explanation to me was that having the price on the site doesn’t mean that they will be for sale without contract at that price on Friday. Apple is just letting people know what the price of the phone is, but are not offering them for no-contract sales. Not yet, anyway.

I’m really frustrated by all of this. I’m a registered iPhone developer. I was just about ready to release my first app, but decided that it would benefit from some new features as a bonus to people who might buy it. I want to test it on the hardware before I ship; I’d hate to send out buggy software simply because Apple / Rogers / Fido won’t sell me the hardware.

I’m willing to pay the $800 but might not be able to.

    Rediculous. Totally unbelievable.

How can they treat customers and developers this way? If, on Friday, I end up going down to the store and don’t return with the hardware (for any other reason than it was sold out), I’ll declare myself done with the whole mess. I’m tired of hidden costs, changing contracts that only change against me, and hidden or unknown policies.

I love the iPhone, but enough is enough.

Yikes! I feel you bro… What a mess. If you could let us know what your experience is tomorrow, that would be fantastic. Also, where is everyone seeing these $699/$799 price points on the Apple.ca website? I can’t seem to find them…

The apple.ca site has the prices in the grey-fine-print-hard-to-see text at the bottom of this page: http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/iphone/

They say the “no-contract” prices, but apparently, we can’t buy them at those prices. I’m going to still be going there to see what happens on friday, but… I bet they say, “sorry”. I will not cancel my contract in order to upgrade, as that will end up costing me far more.

Just a quick update on my progress, I emailed back and forth between a representative from the Yorkdale store, and here is what I’ve got:

“Stock has been allocated to customers who have appointments first.”
You NEED to already be involved with either Rogers or Fido in order to buy the phone at all. Even for the “No-Contract” Price. What this means is, I will need to verify using photo ID that I (or someone who is with me) are the PRIMARY account holder on the account that my phone is tied to, in order to purchase the 3G S at the $699/$799 price point. They are NOT authorized to sell someone a phone who is not either signing up for a new plan, or currently has a plan with either Rogers or Fido.

Also, just to clarify, I do NOT have to sign an additional 3-yrs to get the no-term price.

    Cheers, and good luck tomorrow.

@Appleman: You beat me to it.

I just got off the phone (several times, actually) with both Fido and Apple. I can confirm exactly what you’ve said.

The no-contract price WILL be offered to EXISTING fido/rogers customers who don’t qualify for the upgrade; I didn’t try and go deeper into that statement about whether they will force contract renewals if you ARE eligible.

Once you can, without any doubt, show that you own the contract currently running with fido/rogers, you can buy the phone at the no-contract price. it is locked to fido or rogers.

    New customers must buy contract.

The rep I talked to would not say that appointments are going to get priority. He said, “having an appointment does not guarantee that the hardware will be available to you.” He also said that “we can not confirm over the phone if there is hardware available before you arrive in the store.”

Basically, get there as early as you can and hope they have some left. At least, that was the feeling I got, especially since they plan to open up much earlier specifically due to the iPhone launch.

Sell sell sell. that seems to be the order of the day.

So what are the advantages of buying a no-contract iPhone 3G S ? I don’t mind paying $799 for a contract-free iPhone. I’ll be a new customer with Rogers, and I’d rather not have a contract but is it really worth it ? I guess prices will be higher for voice+data plans without a 3 year contract. I would like to know what I should do before going to a store tomorrow because I’m sure they’ll do their best to convince me to get a 3 year contract and I don’t want to regret my decision later.

GREAT NEWS! Fido kiosk @ Oakridge mall rocks! ironically, this is where I got my 3G last year.

I was able to confirm pricing: 16GB-$699 32GB-$799

Non-eligible Fido customers WILL be able to purchase the phone @ the above prices.

You can only use Fido dollars if you renew your data plan to a 3yr contract which means you must currently be on a month-to-month data plan today.

Owner is trying to get enough staff to open between 8AM & 9AM.

He also said the information was distributed at noon today so any other store (Apple or Fido) who claim they haven’t been told anything is full of s%^t!!!

    Hello!
I live overseas and there's no iPhone over here yet. I'll be in Canada shortly and I was wondering if it is possible for a tourist to purchase the iPhone without the contract.
Are the Apple Stores selling them, as reported?
I really appreciate any news. Thanks!

I will admit it, the I phone is a pretty good smartphone. But is it worth all that crap just to have one? I think its a bad idea all around with apple getting ready to leave at&t, pity all the at&t people with I phone, wonder what's gonna happen and how much money it will cost to get it working when that time comes.just get a BB, they good and very smart
