2018 iPhone Specs, Features, Prices and More Leaked by Apple Analyst Kuo

Were you counting on Apple Pencil support for this year’s iPhone models? Well, don’t count on it, if respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is to be believed. The analyst sent out a research note this morning with this crystal ball predictions on what will happen this year with Apple’s 2018 iPhone models (he correctly noted features for iPhone X last year, too).

According to Kuo’s note to investors—obtained by MacRumors—three new iPhone models for 2018, expected to be announced during the week of September 9th, will not support Apple Pencil.

Kuo says 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED iPhone models, which are rumoured to sport design features from the iPhone X, are set to be available in September. But Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone, which will include an LCD display, is reportedly coming “slightly later due to its production schedule.”

Earlier this morning, Bloomberg shared Apple’s upcoming 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED iPhone models may include dual-SIM models for markets like China, and Kuo is reporting the same. Kuo says the 5.8-inch iPhone will not include dual-SIM and there is doubt whether e-SIM (as found in Apple’s LTE iPads) could debut.

Bloomberg also said there would be no refresh for iPad mini, while a new Apple Watch will debut with thinner bezels that will be compatible with existing watch bands.

Kuo also shared a chart detailing specs for each new iPhone coming in 2018. Here’s what we can gather from his typically eerily accurate sources. We’ve noted the differences between each model in bold:

6.5-inch OLED iPhone ($900-999 USD Starting Price; $1166-1295 CAD)

  • A12
  • 2688 x 1242 resolution
  • 64/256/512 GB storage options
  • 4GB RAM
  • Dual-SIM option
  • Face ID
  • 4 x 4 MIMO antenna
  • Stainless steel frame
  • Dual 12MP rear cameras
  • 3300-3400 mAh (2-cell) battery
  • 3 colours

5.8-inch OLED iPhone ($800-899 USD Starting Price; $1037-1165 CAD)

  • A12
  • 2436 x 1125 resolution
  • 64/256/512 GB storage options
  • 4GB RAM
  • Single SIM option
  • Face ID
  • 4 x 4 MIMO antenna
  • Stainless steel frame
  • Dual 12MP rear cameras
  • 2700-2800 mAh (2-cell) battery
  • 3 colours

6.1-inch LCD iPhone ($600-699 USD Starting Price; $777-$906 CAD)

  • A12
  • 1792 x 828 resolution
  • 64/256 GB storage options
  • 3GB RAM
  • Dual-SIM option
  • Face ID
  • 2 x 2 MIMO
  • Aluminum frame
  • Single 12MP rear camera
  • 2600-2700 mAh (2-cell) battery
  • 5 colours

Again, these rumoured specifications for Apple’s 2018 iPhones mean consumers are again forced to make decisions on which model to spend their money on. If you want a 512GB storage option, more RAM, dual rear cameras and an OLED display, you’ll need to shell out more cash. But if you want an iPhone in more colours, it looks like the 6.1-inch model will offer some new options, bringing back the days of the iPhone 5c.

Given the current USD to CAD exchange rate, you can bet prices in Canada will be slightly higher versus the USA again.

As we lead up to Apple’s expected September iPhone event, expect more leaks to come.
