Apple’s Datakalab Acquisition Aims to Boost On-Device AI Capabilities
Apple has made a strategic move in the AI space by acquiring Paris-based startup Datakalab, specializing in on-device processing.
AirPort Base Station Firmwares 7.6.9, 7.7.9 Released to Address KRACK Wi-Fi Bug
Apple has released new firmware updates for its AirPort Base Stations, which addresses the recent KRACK vulnerability targeting the WPA2 security protocol. Apple has already patched iOS, tvOS, watchOS and macOS for customers.
Here’s what’s available:
- Firmware 7.6.9: AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule base stations with 802.11n
- Firmware 7.7.9: AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac
Firmware 7.7.9 goes beyond KRACK, to say “a memory corruption issue was addressed with improved memory handling.” Apple said “An attacker within range may be able to execute arbitrary code on the Wi-Fi chip.”
These firmware updates come nearly one year after 7.7.8 and 7.6.8 were released nearly a year ago.
How to update your AirPort Base Stations? Launch AirPort Utility on your Mac, then go to Updates. Alternatively, you can launch the AirPort Utility iOS app and install updates remotely.
Back in November 2016, Bloomberg reported Apple had disbanded its division which created AirPort wireless routers, in efforts to reallocate engineers to other product divisions. Apple still sells AirPort hardware both online and in store, however nowadays mesh Wi-Fi setups have become popular, such as smart offerings like Google Wifi and TP-Link Deco M5.
