Amazon to Open New Vancouver Office in 2020, Create 1000 New Jobs

Amazon has announced it will open up a new office in downtown Vancouver with Oxford Properties, its second in the city, to open in 2020.

A lease has been signed for the new office, which will double its Vancouver workforce from 1,000 to 2,000. There are now 5,000 full-time Amazon employees in Canada, across B.C., Ontario and Quebec.

“Amazon is excited to continue growing our workforce throughout Canada,” said Alexandre Gagnon, Vice President of Amazon Canada and Mexico, in a statement to iPhone in Canada. “We are among the largest employers of software engineers in Canada and look forward to continuing to create new job opportunities for Canadians.”

Fulfilment centres in Delta and New Westminster employ 500 B.C. residents, while there is also an Amazon subsidiary, Abebooks.com, based in the province’s capital city, Victoria.

“I’m pleased Amazon is increasing their presence in Vancouver, creating good jobs and helping us build a strong, sustainable economy that works for everyone,” said Premier John Horgan.

Last month, Amazon announced its seventh fulfillment centre in Canada would be coming soon, located in Calgary’s Rocky View community.
