Apple Drops Support For Original iPhone

With the launch of iPhone OS 4.0, Apple indicated that the 4.0 firmware will run on the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod Touch. It was also stated that the firmware would support the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod Touch, but that some 4.0 OS features would not function.

What was not indicated at all was any support for the Original iPhone or the first-generation iPod Touch.

If there was any concern before, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has now said in an email that Apple will no longer support the first generation devices.

As reported by MacStories, a Twitter user sent an email to Steve Jobs asking about support for the Original iPhone. The reply from Jobs?

Sorry, no.

Furthermore, looking at Apple’s website, the 4.0 OS preview page also omits any support for first generation devices and only mentions support for the second and third-generation iPod Touch, as well as the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Well Original iPhone owners, it looks like it may be upgrade time. It was a great run.
