Apple Employee Leaked iOS 11 GM Download Links to MacRumors, 9to5Mac: BBC

The last time we saw a leak of this proportion, was probably back when Gizmodo obtained the iPhone 4 before it launched, as the latter was lost by an employee in a bar, then sold to the tech publication by a stranger.

With the leak of iOS 11 GM to 9to5Mac and MacRumors, surprises from Tuesday’s iPhone special event have been spoiled, it seems, as details within the firmware have seemingly confirmed names such as ‘iPhone X’ with Face ID, new AirPods, Apple Watch with LTE, a 4K Apple TV, and the new 6-core A11Fusion CPU.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber wrote yesterday the iOS 11 GM builds were leaked from within Apple, as these obscured, unguessable URLs were sent to MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

Now, the BBC has corroborated Gruber’s claims, reporting they “independently confirmed that an anonymous source provided the publications with links to iOS 11’s gold master (GM) code that downloaded the software from Apple’s own computer servers.”

In response to the BBC’s investigation, Gruber responded to say “I wish I could say more about how I know what I know, but it’s good to see the BBC confirm this. The BBC doesn’t say definitively that the leak was sent by an Apple employee, but I can state with nearly 100 percent certainty that it was. I also think there’s a good chance Apple is going to figure out who it was.”

You have to be pretty dense to think Apple would not be able to track down who leaked these URLs. Somebody is “going to get a hurt real bad,” as Russell Peters would say.

Despite the leak of iOS 11 GM, many are still highly anticipating Tuesday’s special event, set to kick off at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park.

  • Sorry, but you’re a day too late to the party.

  • John McClane

    Better late than never…

  • Day late how so? This is talking about double confirmation it was an employee that leaked it.

  • John McClane

Probably he’s the one who put the pictures online. 🙂

  • Dansk

Definitely not late! It goes without saying the speculation is an employee thus far, this is about double confirmation, confirming it’s an employee!

  • johnnygoodface

You ain’t late Gary! And even with those spoilers (and confirmation of spoilers) no way I’m gonna miss Tuesday’s event! I’ve already taken the afternoon off (as I always do) just for this!

  • Steve Wright

“Somebody is “going to get a hurt real bad,” as Russell Peters would say.” – Waaay too funny! ????????????

  • And even with all these leaks, we still can’t make/receive VoIP calls on the Apple Watch.

Come on Apple, move with the times.

  • Riddlemethis

Hmm. I was hoping iPhone X was just something for the developers until the real name of the phone is released. IPhone X? Is the phone going to be geared for “restricted” “porn enthusiasts”? Or is Vin Diesel going to be endorsing the model?

  • Riddlemethis

    Missing work for this?

Dude. In case nobody had the nerge to tell you. You seriously need to get a life.

  • Riddlemethis

How so? If this was posted next week would you still write that? Sorry but not sorry. I’m taking what you wrote literally.

  • johnnygoodface

You always complain or critics everything and everyone here… That’s tiring. Learn some respect man!

  • I’m avoiding most of the information from the leaks because I want to see it presented the way Apple intended to present it tomorrow.

  • poopchute

    It’s not the iPhone XXX.
    What are you on?

  • poopchute

    “nerge”
Is that yet another new millennial thing us adults don’t know about yet?

For a minute, let’s pretend that you are respected enough at home that you don’t feel the need to go online and tell strangers how to live their lives.

    It feels good doesn’t it?

Now it’s a new day, try acting like you’ve had access to a computer for longer than five minutes.

  • FragilityG4

I should have taken your approach… Friday I was up all night hitting refresh on this and 9to5’s site! All be it, I know I’m still going to thoroughly enjoy the presentation!

  • Salinger

I wasn’t quite that bad LOL But I have been reading the leaks as they come out. As you say, doesn’t really matter, it’s a completely different experience seeing the keynote and the actual phone on-screen.

People can say whatever they want about Apple, they do an amazing job on new product presentations; convincing you that you must have this phone and have it now! 🙂

  • Dex

    X = roman numeral for 10

  • Kirk

I’m with you on that. I never went into detail on any of those leaked articles because, for one it’s not there place to present this information first! I’ll let Apple try and sell it to me. ????

  • FragilityG4

If I wasn’t so busy at work right now I would take the afternoon off as well. At least I can stream it at my desk!

  • John McClane

I meant something ABSOLUTELY different. But, whatever…!
