Apple Watch’s Sapphire Cover Undergoes Scratch Test [VIDEO]

Apple watch stress test

Just hours before Apple Watch pre-orders go live, iPhonefixed, an iPhone repair, parts, and accessories store, managed to grab a 38 mm Apple Watch display cover. Apple claims that the cover is made of “brilliantly scratch-resistant sapphire crystal,” so the guys over at iPhonefixed decided to test that claim (via MacRumors).

The stress test begins with the cover being rubbed against a stone wall and then scratched with a coin, key, and even abrasive paper, followed by a hammer and a power-drill test.

The result: no scratches on the sapphire cover, so it certainly looks like the watch’s display will be well protected.

Unfortunately for many, the sapphire crystal cover is limited to the ?Watch and the ? Watch Edition models. The Sport model’s display is protected by “strengthened, lightweight Ion-X glass.” According to Apple’s description, the company used “aluminosilicate glass that’s especially resistant to scratches and impact,” so if you are buying the Sport model — recommended by most press reviews — your Watch will be protected as well.
