BMW to Add Support for Apple CarPlay in Second Half of This Year

While the BMW Group is listed on Apple’s microsite site dedicated to CarPlay, the car manufacturer hasn’t officially announced support for “iOS on four wheels.” That’s about to change this year, as Bimmerpost has spotted an official pricelist revealing that BMW will finally add support for CarPay (via 9to5Mac).

The German language document — you can download it here — lists CarPlay as an option that future car X5M and X6M owners can purchase for €300. Those vehicles will incorporate 10.25-inch touchscreens. Since CarPlay support is in preparation, it will likely be available in the second half of 2016, at least that’s what the text seem to suggest.

The “drahtlose” word hints at possible wireless CarPlay support which we’ve been hearing rumours about for a while now. While CarPlay still requires you to plug your iPhone in, the protocol supports wireless connectivity on devices running version iOS 9 or later.

Although it has been available for a while now, car manufacturers have been slow to adopt CarPlay. So far major automakers such as Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and others have already added support for the service.
