Bought an Unlocked iPhone 4 From Apple? Check Your Receipt

Did you buy an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple? If you did, here is some very important info for you. Apparently some people who purchased unlocked iPhone 4 units have had issues of being sold locked phones. iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums user draz and iFoneHome have started some threads here and here on this issue. iFoneHome bought an unlocked phone, but it was actually locked. How to check?

Here’s the lowdown. Go grab your receipt first, and check for the following under the SIM details:

No Contract Sim = Your iPhone 4 is unlocked.
Rogers/Telus/Bell Micro Sim iPhone 4 = Your iPhone 4 is locked.

Here is an image of an unlocked receipt (left) versus locked receipt (right):

Here’s a clearer pic of an UNLOCKED receipt, from @iPhoneArena:

Update 7:34pm, Aug.7: The process of unlocking your iPhone 4 is completed through the Point of Sale process in the Apple Store. On top of checking your receipt, pop in a microSIM from another carrier to truly verify its unlocked status. Also, if there is all “1′s” on the receipt part for the iPhone, it’s unlocked.

I just checked my receipt and it’s correct. I know this won’t apply to everyone, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! How did your receipt turn out?

Thanks to @TechMonitor, @iPhoneArena, draz and iFoneHome!

I'm good to go with no contract sim though the guy doing the sale did confirm he was doing it right with someone else to ensure i wouldn't get a locked phone. Thanks Ryan @ southgate apple store! :)

  • http://twitter.com/metageoff Geoff Longman

my receipt matches the no contract example. whew.

  • Whiterhino14

Wow. I got worried there for a sec. I just put an SGP body shield on and I didn't want to send my baby back to apple for a new one. My bill says NO CONTRACT SIM.
    Thank God

    Your welcome

    Now that's customer service!

  • gloomyx

    not cool!!!
mine says Rogers Micro Sim iPhone 4

  • gloomyx

i'm going back tomorrow morning to have this sorted out!

  • Bdobson

This is odd, I received 2 receipts when I bought my phone, one has both the phone and the sim. In that one it says no contract sim. I, however, received a second receipt but that one says Rogers sim? So now I'm confused.

  • Dwade416

I have 2 reciepts. One with the iphone and no contract sim for $0. The other has a Telus sim for $0. Does this still mean i have an unlocked iphone.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

If there is all “1's” on the receipt part for the iPhone, it's unlocked.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Yours is unlocked

  • raids1025

Wow, got worried, too. Checked my receipt and indeed it is right. I've been checking my iPhone 4 with my Rogers iPad sim and briefly it will recognize it as Rogers then will go to no service. I'm using my iPhone 4 with Fido. I was wonderin' if this is really unlocked. Thanks Gary!

BTW, i also noticed that unlocked iPhone sold in Canada have a letter U in serial number? Like 7Uxxxxxxxxx

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Unlocked

    Mike

  • Bdobson

Do you know what's up with the second receipt they sent me? If not for that I would not be worried at all :-)

  • raids1025

yeah, check it out and inform us again…

  • Bdobson

Mine should be unlocked and the serial # does not have a U in it.

Mine turned out fine but the guy at the Apple store almost locked it by accident. He even said so and had to void everything and start again.. I wonder what it is that locks it since it was all the same iPhone and just some magic barcode scanning that was locking it or not…

  • Jpilgrim

i bought mine on contract (telus) at an apple store, but the other day when messing around in the settings i noticed the phone searches for and detects telus, bell, and rogers networks, and will let me switch to em, though as soon as i do i get no service obviously. i don't see all 1's on my receipt. trying this with a friends 3gs only detected the network he was with. did i luck out and get an unlocked phone?

Ex, how come the new receipt image have 30 days return and the old receipt image is only 15 days? Mine, i bought on the first day and it says 15 days too. Are those who bought the following days now have 30 days return like in the US?

  • raids1025

Mine is unlocked bought at Apple Store..

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

I can't speak for those receipts.

  • Hyperextension

SOB!!! I purchased 2 units and looks like they messed one of them up. Guess I am going to Apple Store to swap. Anyone do this yet? What are the chances? I suppose the Genius Bar will tell me I have to wait until they have stock?

  • Anwar

I have same issue. I bought an iPhone for my friend without sim card, and I shipped it to him. He received the iPhone but he could not use it. iTunes gives this massage:

“The sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert the SIM card thar came with your iphone or visit a supported carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card.”

    What to do now?!

  • Bee

i see lots of 9's instead of 1's. but it does say 'no contract sim'..is that right?!

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Yep. Unlocked.

  • Myeong Jin Yoo

So… the ppl who bought unlocked iphone at the apple store received FREE micro sim cards? I ordered mine from the website. Does this mean I have to buy micro sim separately? There goes another $15…

  • RAAP

Yeah, they should increase the font of the forum link at the top or have it more visible somwhere else. It took me awhile to notice too!

  • Wooj

My understanding is that a LOCKED contract iphone is returnable with 30minutes maximum use and within 15days after purchase. An UNLOCKED puchased iphone is returnable withing 30 dsys. This is what I have been told at the Apple Store when I bought mine. I am also aware with the carriers on their other phones is the 30minute and within 15 days return policy. Maybe the first couple days of sales that Apple didn't have this properly processed on the bill of sale as well. Mine was bought on Aug.4th and all looks good.

  • Sean

I was worried about this becuase when I bought it at the apple store the guy was asking me what carrier I'm with and I said I want an unlocked one. He said yea but what carrier, I didn't know why this would make a difference if I was buying unlocked. So I said Rogers and he gave me a rogers micro sim. Just checked my receipt and it has a bunch of 1's and says “No contract sim” so I'm good to go….also if I go into settings and select carrier it shows Rogers selected but it also does a search and shows Telus and Bell as options

Yes, free micro sim at the apple store. Online, you need to get it from your carrier. You could probably talk someone into giving you one for free though, if your monthly bill is high enough.

1- Can I activate my Iphone (if I get it) via Itunes without a Micro-sim card inserted? so I can order a free bumper before inserting a micro-sim card

2- can my friend use his credit card (from different country) to buy Iphone from online and shipped it to me as a birthday gift to his wife who currently lives in Canada?

I walked by a fido store and asked to try their microsim off their demo phone and it didn't recognize any signal at all. So is it locked?

  • Anwar

I know that. I am trying to get it unlocked by calling Apple support. I stayed in line for 13 hours and now this :(

  • Hyperextension

I just swapped mine out at Sherway Gardens Apple Store. They took the one that was wrong back. They were going to return it to a gift card and then redo the sale as unlocked, but that did not work. I had to get a brand new one. Luckily they had one in the back. I am now good to go with both unlocked phones.

  • Mike

To Gary and the iPhoneInCanada team,
after reading this thread in morning i ran for my bill and noticed that it DID NOT SAY “no contract sim, and 1 fills under the ICCID” for the two iphone i bought at full price. I then headed over to the apple store (montreal) and explained the situation, the folks there checked my phones and confirmed that i was indeed locked (much to their suprise). There was no way for them to unlock my current phones so i left with two new unlocked phones, i guess they still had a “reserve” supply of iphone 4's for situations like these.

Just want to say you guys do top notch reporting, i can always rely on you for information! with out you i would have had a locked iphone4!

    cheers!

nope they tried that and it didn't work

  • Wuju

    Mine are all 1111111s….

  • waynem

Now this is interesting. Got back into town from the US and as my post in the forums earlier it appears my “unlocked” phone is locked. Tested it with an ATT sim and it did not work. Went to ATT store and convinced to test my sim in one of their iPhone 4's and it worked no issues.

When phone is connected to iTunes, I carry a laptop, with the ATT sim in my phone it says that the sim is not an authorized one (or something like that).

Anyways, just checked my bill and just like the picture showing no contract sim, etc., that is the way my bill looks.

But my phone still appears to be locked. Got an appointment at Pacific Centre tomorrow and see if this can be sorted out.

Have any of you actually tested your phones with different sims? Just curious.

A few more things: I did a restore as the Apple Support guy suggested and that did not correct it (he didn't think so but said try anyways). Then because it is so silly, I jailbroke and unlocked the phone and the sim worked! Restored it now so when I get to PC they can give me a new one (I hope).

  • Jaye

hi everyone…i just wanted to share with you guys that my aunt in england bought me an iphone4 waited in line and was able to snap me one on launch day in the UK and sent it to me here in canada…just recently i had gotten a micro sim here in canada and my micro sim wouldnt work…i called apple and they admitted that the phone is unlocked but still “regionally” locked…well, the apple web wite was very misleading because it clearly states buying an unlocked iphone4 you can use it anywhere in the world with any sim. the only defense that apple had was that there is a little stipulation (which customers HAVE TO READ between the lines) that apple will not ship to any other county other than the country youre ordering the phone from.

  • Jlocicero

Again, thanks for the excellent customer service!

  • G4supermax

since like i brought a lucked version from apple store…. what should i do?? Can apple store does the unlock for me??

I have two separate receipts. 1 for the iphone and no contract sim, the other for a fido microsim. BUT I don't have 1's on my receipt instead i have the following:

    Mobile Number: 1234567890
    Ban: 000

    is mine unlocked??

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Unlocked

  • ridiculous

“regionally” locked? Your iPhone 4 can exchange sims in Europe but cannot use sims in N.A.? WTH!!!! Your aunt simply got a locked iPhone 4!

  • Jaye

she specifically asked for an unlocked one and paid the full unsubsidized price. the thing that pisses me off is that apple in UK assured her it was unlocked and will work with any micro sim in the world.
whatever, its all good, i was actually able to sell it on ebay for 200.00 CAD more for what i bought it for….i just felt bad that my aunt waited in line for me.

  • Gus

It does not make sense. Apple claims it is unlocked but locked to the region. So what happens to unlocked phones in N.A, are those region locked also???? Sounds like someone at the Apple store does not have their facts right.

  • Ted

I bought an unlocked 32GB phone from the Apple Store.

    My receipt reads:

    Mobile Number : 9999999999
    BAN: 9999999999

    Is this unlocked ??

  • owais

Just want to share an additional information. The reciept from the Apple Store's mention that the return must be within 14 days but for the iPhone the return deadline is actually 30 days from purchase and there is no restocking fee for iphones. I confirmed this from their customer service call centre last week.

It is interested if you are facing the death grip problems and also if you originally purchased an unlocked phone from an apple store but now you are considering getting it on contract instead. Or viceversa.

  • ridiculous

have you been to apple store yet? Is it really locked?

Alright, I got mine fixed. I had bought 2 iphone 4's unlocked, mailed them to the states, a week later they got them, put the sim cards in, and they didn't work. Apple store in West Edmonton messed up and put the sim cards on the receipt. I went down there today and they were able to fix it. Apparently, he returned both units, and resold them properly, and they were then unlocked. It apparently took 2 hours for the system to acknowledge that they were unlocked. The person may have to restore the phone in itunes for it to be unlocked… but that wasn't the case for me.

Anyways, West Edmonton fixed it, so if you have any problems, I'd recommend them.

i ordered mine from apple canada online ,before that I asked and phoned twise with a guy from apple retail store .All they said is that they are unlocked,commitment-free is same as unlocked, you can use any micro-sim in the world,it works…They didn't say anything about regionally locked…
After I read Jaye's message I care about mine…Because I'm planning to use it in my country(TURKEY)…
Any comment, sharing information will be appreciated…

I had this issue myself and took the phones back to apple the next day. They replaced all 4 of the phones I bought from them and apologized for the inconvenience!

Wow. I am just flabbergasted at the amount of people who can't read. Anyways, love the site guys. Ex has a lot of patience… I would have lost it after the second stupid question. Checked my receipt as soon as I got home, said “No Contract Sim”. Unlocked. So I'm good to go.

I just returned my locked phone, and got a brand new unlocked one right away. Thx for ur guys who started such a brilliant topic; otherwise, it should be xxxx up to have a locked iPhone 4. A big up for Ex and Gary.

Sooo, I bought my iPhone 4 unlocked from the Apple Store last week.
Now I'm in the caribbean, popped in a sim from here and it doesnt work.
I think WTF, so I call Apple's call centre, and this is the general gist of the conversation.

Buying an iPhone 4 from the Apple Store at full price is unlocked and comittment free. However, you cannot use the phone outside of Canadian cell providers.

    O M F G.
    This sucks balls :(

So I've pretty much given up on the idea of getting an iphone from an apple retail store, and may try orderring one from the online store. If I proceed with this, apple will send me an unlocked phone, then do I need to go into a Bell store to buy a microSIM for it or will apple be sending me a SIM with it?

I'm a little sketchy on the whole locking/activation process.

I've read it just takes a couple keypresses on a computer to lock a phone to a carrier, and there are reports that people have bought unlocked phones from apple, only to find out they were inadvertantly locked to a carrier, how do I make sure if I take my unlocked phone in to a Bell store to buy one of their microSIMS to use with it that they wont lock the phone while I'm doing this?

What steps do I need to take to make sure it remains unlocked, and what should I make sure doesn't happen at the Bell store if I need to get a microSIM there?

    thanks.

    It will always be unlocked.
For the SIM, pay for one at the carrier or get it free at Apple Store.

Dear Ex or Gary. Got an iPhone 4 on the 2nd shipment last week. Waited in line for 5 hours with the intent on upgrading my Fido agreement with a $250 rebate for the 32gb. This rebate and eligibility was confirmed over the fido web tool as well as over the phone. Nevertheless, when I finally sat down with the Apple rep., he said on his system that I was not eligible for the upgrade or $250 rebate. We both tried calling Fido customer service but the reception in that store was terrible. I said screw it and plunked down $779 for the factory unlocked phone with the intent on calling Fido the next day to complain. Well, when I called they found there must’ve been a malfunction in the system so they will now give me the $250 rebate.

MY QUESTION: The iphone in my hands right now is factory unlocked but now that Fido is giving me the $250 rebate with contract renewal, will they be able to RE-LOCK the phone over their system ???

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    No.
    It’s unlocked.

So when my phones finally arrives in the mail on the 27th (Since PC & Oakridge are getting minimal amounts -Oakridge only got 30 phones in today), I can just take my receipt into an Apple store and get two free Fido microsims? Thanks again!

There’s no way of knowing if it’s unlocked without the receipt.
I would advise you contact 1800 MY APPLE and give them the serial number to confirm, if you’re buying it without receipt or you’ve it opened.

Also check to make sure the box SN# matches the phone, IF it’s open, and not sealed.

Even some are sealing it manually now (from US), they Software Unlock and then seal it and sell it as Unlocked!!

    Regards,

    Yep!

Mine says the same thing, and according to the apple store guy, it is locked (I gotta find the box so I can return it/repurchase it). He seemed to think the only thing that mattered was the SIM card info (mine says fido) on the receipt (he didn’t even look at the phone before stating it was locked).

  • JL

    Thanks for the info.
I’m so mad! I realized something was wrong when I tried earlier today popping in a friend’s SIM and the phone said “Invalid SIM”. I didn’t know know what was wrong, so after some googling, I came here. I just checked by receipt and it seems they’ve locked it. I specifically asked the guy selling me the phone to ensure that it doesn’t lock the phone (since another staff informed us while we waited in line that they needed to be on separate bill). I hope they will still return it because it’s now past the return date listed on the bill!

How to make sure if the iPhone 4 is unlocked if I purchased it online? Any comment?

  • Anonymous

Bought my iPhone 4 from the online Apple Store, unlocked of course. Bought a MicroSIM from WirelessWave and they moved my existing Rogers account onto the new phone. Is there anything they could have done to screw up my factory unlock? I don’t have another SIM to verify with.

Settings -> About showed the IMEI and ICCID fields filled up with numbers, but is that normal for unlocked phones when there’s a SIM currently inside?

I’m going to use Rogers this year, but don’t want to have an issue next year when my contract is finally up…

  • Jack

I should have seen this post earlier. I bought iphone 4 from Apple Store (Eaton Centre), but, I later I found out its locked to Fido !!!. I called Apple Technical Support – which forwarded me to the US, and they told me I would have to contact my Carrier Provider to unlock it. It doesn’t make sense. I paid full for an unlocked iphone 4, and ended up getting a locked one. I called Fido, and they said they would unlock my iPhone for $50.

I am going to head towards Apple Store next week to see whats going on.

  • Sanjay k

My iPhone turned out to be locked to fido… I later went to the store and got a completely new one from the Apple store in toronto..
It seems apple store mistakenly handed outa lot of locked phones…

    what is the tax?

Just bought an unlocked iPhone 4 in Richmond BC Apple store. Receipt had “No contract SIM” but no ICCID with all 1′s as shown above. Nevertheless it was unlocked. Thanks for the great info in this post that allowed me to buy with confidence.

Okay so many people posted so many things.
    Okay let us be simple.
If you buy any iPhone from any apple store or any other store in Canada it will be unlocked until you put your SIM card in, it will be then locked to the wireless carrier of that SIM card.
If you want to buy a Phone where you can take it any where and put any SIM card in it without using any tools such as Gavey SIM or jailbreak unlock then you have to order it online via Apple web store. This is the only way.
I had one 3GS which was used with Rogers then switched to Telus, I also tried Bell and it all worked. in the end I gave it to my dad who works overseas  in UAE and he was with Etisalat and it worked.
    How you know it’s working?
As soon as you put the SIM in and you go to wireless carrier you will see it’s saying Rogers, Bell ..etc in my case my dad was in Canada and when we swapped the SIMs it’s start reading Etisalat! sure enough he took the phone there and it’s working fine.
Again if you are looking to buy truly unlocked phone – you guessed it buy it from online store and wait for a week to get it and don’t let apple store “geniuses” fools you to make commission out of your pocket

Sigh, the things people will believe..
Allot of miss information in the comments, beware of the n00bs!

Also Please Note: When Apple first released the iPhone 2G,
they told customers that it was “Impossible” to remove the SIMCARD.
Obviously this was a lie. But it shows you how Apple likes to operate.
So don’t believe everything they tell you :P

Oh no my iPhone is dead! (Noob it’s in DFU!)
