Comparing Apple’s New Retina 5K iMac With The Original Macintosh

Apple first released the Macintosh in 1984 and it came with a 512 x 342 black and white display. Last week, the Cupertino-based company took the stage and unveiled the new iMac with 5K Retina display which comes with a 5120 x 2880 display.

iMac_RetinaThe original Macintosh had 175,000 pixels, which was revolutionary for its time. However, Apple’s latest addition to the Mac lineup features a display with more than 14.7 million pixels.

“That’s an increase from 175,000 pixels to more than 14.7 million – an 8,400% increase. 80 of the original Macintosh displays fit within a single Retina 5K display”

The image below shows the original black and white screen of the Macintosh overlaid on top of the full-size desktop background image from Apple’s new Retina 5K iMac. The image shows how far technology has advanced over the past 30 years.

The base model of Apple’s new iMac includes Intel’s i5-4690 quad-core CPU running at 3.5GHz and AMD’s Radeon R9 M290X GPU with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. All models of the iMac now come with Apple’s Fusion Drive.
