How to Fix iOS 9 Update Stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’ Screen

A select number of users trying to update to iOS 9 have been reporting on a thread at Apple Support Communities that their update has been stuck at ‘Slide to Upgrade’ screen. While the issue is not widespread, it appears that the only way to fix the bug is to restore your iOS device from an iTunes backup.

As pointed out by iPhoneHacks, Apple has also published a new support document on how to fix the issue. Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1:

Connect your iOS device to your computer and open iTunes.

Step 2:

Select your device. If you don’t see it listed, force restart your device by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Step 3:

If you made an iTunes backup of your device before updating to iOS 9, restore your device from that backup. If not, you need to make a backup of your device in iTunes, then restore from that backup.

Make sure that you have create a backup of your device in iTunes from which you need to restore. A backup in iCloud won’t help in this case.

Let us know if this resolves the issue for you in the comments section.

What do you do if you don’t have a computer? I thought iCloud was there to backup your stuff but it’s of no use in this & other situations like this that have happened before.

Mine was stuck in the greyed out screen with Apple logo..I was wondering why it’s taking so long as I connected to my computer to do the update. I unplugged it and did a hard reset…and it booted up and finished the update..guess I am one of the lucky one to not having to restore..

My update and subsequent restore stuck at the Apple symbol. I was able to solve the problem by removing the SIM and doing a restore.

I went to do a OTA update on the mrs iphone 4s. She was on 7.x. got this error. I had to plug phone into itunes, do a restore to 8.4.1 (manually saved ahead of time). Then update to 9.0. Real pain in the Arse. One of the top technology companies in the world, and you lose a day updating to 9.0 then 8.4.1 then back to 9.0. I had to downgrade to 8.4.1 because find my phone was enabled. At least when I was doing the 9.0 betas’s on my phone, i couldn’t do anything UNTIL I turned it off. When I didn’t get the prompt on the mrs phone, assumed it was ok.
