Foxconn Developing Glass Casing for 10th Anniversary iPhone: Nikkei

According to a report from Nikkei, sources inform the publication Apple supplier Foxconn is creating an all-glass casing for the tenth anniversary iPhone, set for next year.

Determined to secure its position as a key iPhone assembler, Foxconn is developing its glass casing technology. “Foxconn has been trying glass chassis since last year,” a person with knowledge of the Apple supply chain in Taiwan said.

A different source claimed “It is only natural that Foxconn is trying to come up with glass chassis as the capabilities to provide more components will bolster its standing within the supply chain and help with more orders.”

Foxconn is Apple’s iPhone assembler and “has been trying glass chassis since last year,” says an unnamed source close to the Cupertino company’s supply chain in Taiwan.

Taiwan-based Foxconn currently makes metal casings for the iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE and expected ‘iPhone 7 Plus’, while iPhone 6s and ‘iPhone 7’ orders are shared between Catcher and US-based Jail, explains Nikkei.

The tenth anniversary iPhone is expected to come with all-new design, utilizing an OLED display and all-glass design with a metal frame, in what sounds like could be the re-birth of Apple’s iconic iPhone 4/4S.

Also, Nikkei buries on page two Apple was planning to introduce two versions of this year’s ‘iPhone 7 Plus’, one with a single lens camera and one with dual lens, but the former has been abandoned. The anonymous source claimed “This never happened before. Before this year, Apple never made changes to iPhone’s product line mere months before the launch. It has been a volatile year for Apple.”

Lately we’ve heard rumours of three possible iPhone models debuting this fall, which some believe could be named ‘iPhone 7’, ‘iPhone 7 Plus’ and ‘iPhone 7 Pro.’

The news of an all-glass design for Apple’s tenth anniversary iPhone in 2017, corroborates an earlier report from the Wall Street Journal, which said this year’s iPhone won’t be a design overhaul. Next year’s overhauled iPhone design would have features such as an OLED screen and embedded Home button.
