Google Chromecast Launches in Canada for $39, a Rival to AirPlay

Google this evening has announced the launch of their Apple TV ‘rival’ the Chromecast in Canada for $39. The launch also hits 10 other countries in Europe as well:

Today, we are pleased to announce that Chromecast is now available in Canada, and 10 countries — Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

In addition to your favorite apps like YouTube, Google Play Movies, Netflix, Songza and VEVO, and we are adding new content all the time. So instead of huddling around your laptop to watch your favourite movies, or videos you can cast it, sit back, and watch together on the big screen.

The Chromecast was first launched exclusively in the U.S. last summer along with a companion iOS app (US only at the time), which is also available in Canada (not sure when that went live). The HDMI dongle will allow you to stream what’s on Chrome from your Mac/PC, Android device, iOS device and more to your TV.

Google also announced the Chromecast is also now available from Amazon.ca too for $39.

Anyone going to pick one of these up? At $39 it’s priced to be an impulse purchase. If you’ve been using one, let us know how you’ve been enjoying it or not.

Avoiding anything Google as much as possible. Search is enough.

Content is king. Both Google and Amazon are well known for either ignoring Canada with their “content” stores and launching devices in Canada that are all but useless because of the lack of content in Canada.

    tinfoil hat much?

great device folks, if you’re not paranoid, obviously.

I had a Chromecast, the price wasn’t bad, though the device was far from great. It’s clearly very underpowered. It took forever for a Netflix video to load up.I also setup a the plex server so I can stream downloaded movies to my TV and it was a complete disaster. The video would be very choppy and often the audio would fall out of sync. Better to save up some extra coin and look for a refurbished AppleTV

Why wouldn’t you just use wifi to stream over your network, there are free software apps galore …

    p.s. i love google

Exact opposite here, got Chromecast a few months ago (US) and sold off my ATV2 Works great with Plex. You’ll need a good network though.

“The USB dongle” … HDMI, not USB

    Anticipating it!

I have one already, and love it. I just order another one for my second TV.

  • Thanks, fixed

  • This does work over WiFi. It basically turns your TV into a receiver for WiFi streaming, since many TVs don’t have that ability.

Ah yea my bad, I realized its for tvs after the fact. I have a computer attached to my tv making this device redundant.
