How to Use 3D Touch to Read a Message Without Sending a Read Receipt

Here’s a quick tip for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus owners among us. Let’s take a quick look at how to use 3D Touch to read a message in the Messages app, without sending a read receipt.

The easiest way would be to just turn off read receipts, but in most cases you would want the sender to know that you’ve received the message. But how about if you want to check the message to see if it’s something important without starting up a conversation.

Here’s how to use 3D Touch to peek at a message. While you’re in the Messages main screen, simply press down on the conversation you want to “peek” at. The conversation will pop-up on screen, as seen above. If you want to answer the message, or just let the other party know you read it, you can press a bit harder, and you’ll “pop” right into the full conversation.

If you decide to go ahead and reply, you can also swipe up on the “peek” while you’re holding your finger down, and select any one of the canned replies available on screen, or tap “Custom…” and you’ll go right into the conversation, where you can type a reply.
