Instagram to Let Users Disable Comments, More Privacy Features Coming

In a recent blog post, Instagram has announced the addition of three brand-new features to the application, designed to increase users’ security.

In the new update, Instagram will provide users with three new tools that will make moderating pages basically foolproof. It will give users the resources to become the gatekeepers of their own accounts, and to filter their user experience so that they can either have public accounts without leaving the door open to negativity or even private accounts with even more control over who has access to their photos.

Much like Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, the update adds the ability to like other users’ comments on posts. The app is also adding the ability to turn off commenting on specific posts and remove followers from private accounts without using the block button.

Additionally, the photo-sharing application is adding an anonymous reporting tool for posts that feature instances of self-injury, providing certain levels of support to the individual.

“Finally, we want to continue to be a place where people can share deeply personal moments,” the post reads. “From time to time, you may see friends struggling and in need of support. If you believe that someone you care about may be thinking about injuring themselves, you can report it anonymously, and we will connect your friend to organizations that offer help. We have teams working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, around the world to review these reports.”

While the app might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I think we can all agree that these are welcome additions to the Instagram platform.
