iPhone 3G Friday: Miscellaneous Ramblings

Share:

The week is almost over! Bring on the long weekend! Anyways, I thought I’d take a quick moment to summarize some of the interesting iPhone 3G headlines this past week. Let’s take a quick gander shall we?

  • Case of the iPhone 3G crackings: Is your iPhone 3G cracking anywhere?
  • WinPwn 2.5 is coming out soon. If you’re waiting to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, try waiting a bit longer.
  • NetShare by NullRiver enables you to tether your iPhone 3G’s data connection! Get it while you can via the AppStore for $9.99 (I did)! Apple removed it, then put it back up (AT&T does not allow tethering; I don’t think Rogers allows it ether) but I have a feeling it will be pulled again.
  • iTunes 7.7.1 has been released. Update your iTunes for some “fixes” to be resolved.
  • Apple is testing iPhone firmware 2.1 beta–can’t wait for a firmware update to be released! Pwnage has already cracked this 2.1 beta!
  • Rogers has committed $150 million to buy iPhone 3G units…which are still hard to find
  • Don’t forget to enter my invisibleSHIELD 3G contest! Enjoy the long weekend! 🙂

Here’s a video from Engadget of NetShare doing it’s thang:

In response to Atlasunit22, tethering is when you use your phone’s data network to access the internet on your computer. So instead of buying internet and plugging your computer up to a modem at your home, you’re using the cell phone towers to do it. This is very slow and pricier for sure.

I can see why AT&T doesn’t allow it, as they offer unlimited data with all of their iPhone plans, so really, you’d be getting free internet too and that’s a lot of data when you use a computer, even if it’s moving at a snail pace.

Rogers allows it, it seems, but they will charge you for it A LOT. I’m sure Rogers will have absolutely no problem in charging you for tethering at their data rates, so really, I don’t see why anyone would want to do it at all unless you’re in a dire emergency and you absolutely need to use your computer instead of your iPhone.

On their website they say that the $7 unlimited plan doesn’t include tethering, but it doesn’t say that you can’t tether if you choose to anyway, but be prepared to pay the price.

Correction: the speed for tethering isn’t slow slow all the time, but it’s only as fast as your network. So if you have the first generation phone for sure it’ll be super slow, but the 3G will be faster, but still not as fast as a decent wifi connection.

I just noticed lines that appeared to be tiny cracks under the up/down volume buttons; I don’t know what to do?!!

I recently got a 3G with FIDO. I am just curious as to how long it took you from the date you ordered.. to the date you received your invisible shield form ZAGG? Because I want to order it but my address is going to be changing in a few weeks so I don’t want to have it shipped here and then be gone when it arrives.
