iPhone 7 Plus Survives 13 Hours in Icy Russian River

If you have been skeptical about the iPhone 7’s water resistance – there are a handful of videos posted on YouTube (the one posted by EveryThingApplePro received more than 8.6 million views) – here is a Russian story of an accidental “test” in 4°C (39.2°F) water (via AppleInsider).

The Russian-language ykt.ru reports that a Yakutsk resident, an ice fisherman, accidentally dropped his iPhone 7 Plus into one of the ice fishing holes at the weekend. The iPhone 7 Plus was assumed to have a roughly 35% charge when dropped into the water. And since the owner wasn’t able to retrieve it, he had to wait until the saviour, who is on Instagram as emfedor1983, dived into the cold water and pulled it out.

The device was in the water for roughly 13 hours, according to the report. When the diver “saved” the device, it had 19% charge and, as you can see in the inserted Instagram video below, was still working.

Apple advertises the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as devices with an IP67 rating, which makes then “splash, dust and water resistant.” This means that these iPhones are protected against dust ingress and can withstand being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes up to a depth of 1 metre. From the video posted by the Instagram user, you can’t really tell how deep the river is, so we can only speculate, but we won’t – you can decide for yourself. We can’t verify the information: we either accept what the report says, or take a skeptical approach and maybe question the time spent under water. What do you think?
