Apple’s iPhone 8 Special Event Date: September 12 Says WSJ

When will Apple’s fall special event take place? According to unnamed sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal, it will take place on September 12:

Apple Inc. has scheduled a product announcement event on Sept. 12, according to people briefed on its plans, reinforcing expectations that the technology giant will release new iPhones and a smartwatch well ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Sources say Apple will debut three new iPhones, along with a “showcase iPhone” to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the device, which will have a larger screen, facial recognition technology and be more expensive. Last year’s iPhone 7 models are expected to get updates as well.

The WSJ says Apple plans to use the new 1,000 seat Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park for its presentation, but as we’ve seen, construction is not yet complete. Apple held its previous two fall events at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

People familiar with the matter tell the Journal Apple has ramped up ‘iPhone 8’ production in the past few weeks, ready to expand from one plant in China to other factories, to meet holiday demand.

Apple will also debut a cellular Apple Watch with LTE capabilities, allowing the latter to finally become independent of the iPhone.

Last week we also heard about a new 4K Apple TV coming via Bloomberg, but no mention of this was in the WSJ’s report.

The special event date noted by the WSJ seemingly corroborates a previous claim of September 12 made last week by French site Mac4Ever. If anything, we should see Apple send out invites to the press this week.

Last week, the NYT said Apple’s entry level ‘iPhone 8’ would start at $999 USD, a premium price for their latest device. Expect the price in Canadian dollars to start at $1300 or more. Get your wallets ready, folks.

I”m not sure how this “watch with LTE capabilities is going to work. Do a lot of people buy the Apple watch and not the iPhone? I don’t see the mobile companies letting you hook up a watch unless there is a monthly fee, and even $5 a month is $60 a year. Furthermore, the daily roaming fees would get tacked on if you left the country too. I understand the watches currently can latch on to some wi fi hot spots, but I never see when it is doing that, if it does..

I’ll be watching. I’ve got a regular iPhone 7 and I’m going to see if I’ll continue my every other year purchase of a new iPhone or go for the 8.

Miss the time when an iPhone was expensive at 500$ and my plan was 50$/month… This iPhone 8, if the rumors turns out to be true, will be more than 600$ on subsidy with a 80$+/month plan…

Same for macs, I paid my 512GB SSD macbook pro in 2014 for 1500$, now the similar is 2500 and up…
