  • Not all of those items will be available with the 3.0 software and the older 3G iPhones.
Voice Control, Tom Tom, Digital Compass and Nike + are only available on the new iPhone 3GS. I’m sure they’ll be in the software but you won’t be able to access the features on the 3G (maybe jailbroken).

are you sure that TomTom GPS won’t be supported on the original iPhone 3G with OS 3.0 update?

the TomTom webpage simply says it will be available for iPhone 3G after release of OS3.0 (doesn’t specify 3GS only). or does the turn by turn require the digital compass hardware of the 3GS?

I believe tomtom will work on the original iphone. The hardware is fast enough for it. Mind you, the app store will charge a pretty penny for it I am sure. From what I can read on the tomtom website the docking kit for your car is an option and will just cost extra in order to provide enhanced functionality. With any luck other companies like destinator and garmin will get in on the action and provide some competion.

  • You are all correct, it will be available in the software. I just watched all of the keynote and it was demo’ed during the 3.0 portion.
However, the digital compass, voice control and Nike+ were all shown during the 3GS demo, so they will be only available with the new hardware.

I have an AT&T first generation iPhone. I’m thinking of getting a 3GS and giving my old one to my nephew who lives in Ontario. He would have to pay for the calling plan. Could someone please describe the cheapest Ontario plan that would support an first generation iPhone?

a 3.0 feature I was hoping for was some sort of stock iPhone messenger, to rival BB messenger.

There are so many people on iPhones now, including some of my friends. It would be great to have a native chat app to connect with them instantly through push.

  • There isn’t a native app but there are several in the app store that are free and will support push. It is weird that Apple doesn’t make iChat standard

yea I know there are several in the app store but the problem with that is not “everyone” will have it like it was standard/native. That’s why I think it would be much better standard on your iPhone.

“Hey you just got an iPhone? Add me to iChat”

instead of having to download an app, you know? I just think if it was standard it would be used a lot more and not just a chat app people download then never use again.

You make a great point Wardo. I too would love such a feature. I know tons of people who love blackberries for that feature alone. A nice, Apple designed iChat would be awesome. Despite not having a front facing camera I think the benefit of having it on every iPhone, combined with a free chat and Apple design would make this great. Make it so Apple!

Just installed 3.0 two hours ago, followed these instructions:
    http://i.gizmodo.com/5284779/iphone-os-30-now-available-in-torrent-tested-it-works
    Worked great no problem.
Software seems good, Voice record is fine, most likely will never use it. You don’t get Video as per question above. Sent one picture MMS so far and it worked, not sure if Rogers will charge me for it? The search feature is fast, but not sure if I’ll use it to much. The best part so far is the landscape key board and the over all faster speed.
Can’t see my self buying the 3Gs, only major difference will be Video, which I would like but am unwilling to pay $400 for it. I think I will be jail breaking soon, and I’ll just get video that way(ya I know it won’t be as good).
To be honest I’m not to impressed with the new iphone, wanted multi tasking and and a Flash for the camera, got neither. I’ll wait for the next version.

Back to the compass and needing the 3GS, as long as the phone is moving at a min. fast walk, a GPS compass will work fine. I hope the 3.0 software will allow the google map to rotate if were moving? I hope the rotation of the map is not related to the new magma-thingie all together?

    Thoughts?

video capture isn’t included in the software-only update, according to the list of features on Apple’s site. I assume this could be because the original 3G CPU and/or video chip might not be fast enough to support 640×480 30fps – certainly the 3G hardware _can_ support video since jailbroken apps can do it, but I think all those apps are pretty low frame rate (320×240 ~10-15fps, if I recall?) Apple doesn’t seem to like supporting half-baked features so they probably disable it on the old 3G… just my guess.
