iPhone 6 Said to Feature Mobile Payment Platform Powered by NFC

The discussion concerning the iPhone’s NFC capabilities heats up as we approach the rumoured September 9 launch-date. Following schematic leaks and other reports, Wired is the latest publication to confirm that Apple will be equipping the iPhone 6 with an NFC chip.

The company’s next iPhone will feature its own payment platform, sources familiar with the matter told WIRED. In fact, that platform will be one of the hallmark features of the device when it’s unveiled on September 9. We’re told the solution will involve NFC.

Actually, Apple’s own payment platform rides the rising trend of mobile payments. While the US mobile payments market keep on growing, it has not grown as steadily as expected, so it’s far from the goal of mass adoption, although every sign seems to point toward this direction — see PayPal’s survey.

Apple has multiple patents that relate to an iWallet platform. You may recall a patent involving both NFC and iBeacon published in January, detailing how NFC and Bluetooth can be combined for a secure and fast transaction.

Besides, let’s not forget about the discussions that Apple held with payment companies that were reported by The Information.

Rumours of Apple stepping into the mobile payments have been around for a while, especially those related to the possibility that the company has roughly 800 million iTunes accounts with linked to a credit card, so with this in mind, it was really only a question of when rather than if.
