LG Display Said to Be Supplying AMOLED Panels for Apple Watch

LG Display has strengthened its relationship with Apple: according to Digitimes’ sources, the supplier will provide AMOLED panels for the Apple Watch, with an alleged output of 5 million units per month.

Apple will receive about five million AMOLED panels for the device a month throughout 2015, with the Apple Watch expected to be released within the first quarter. The sources said Apple aims to sell upwards of 50 million Apple Watches in 2015.

As you may have already guessed, there were multiple players who were after the Apple Watch display contracts, but Apple has reportedly decided not to purchase panels from Samsung Display and instead has gone with LG Display as the sole panel provider for the device. This part, however, is kind of unlikely, considering how Apple manages its supply chain.

Citing market observers, Digitimes highlights that Apple could use AMOLED displays with its wearable device due to the technology’s flexibility and energy-saving advantages.

Apple introduced the Apple Watch last week, but the device will not hit the market until early 2015, with a starting price of $349.
