YouTuber Claims 2018 MacBook Pro with Core i9 Subject to Excessive Thermal Throttling

Apple is facing criticism for over its new MacBook Pro after a YouTuber claimed the laptop was being slowed down intentionally.

According to a new video from YouTuber Dave Lee, the MacBook Pro 2018 Core i9 edition heats up very quickly, causing the throttling to kick in and lower the clock speed of the processor. The lower the clock speed, the slower the processor performs.

Lee said he performed a comparison of video rendering times in Adobe Premiere Pro, and the results showed that the 15-inch MacBook Pro from 2017 with a Core i7 CPU rendered the video faster than this year’s model with an i9 CPU.

The YouTuber noted that this situation is “absurd” especially given the Core i9 chip in the massively expensive MacBook Pro is unlocked and overclockable, thereby all that potential power is wasted.

“If you have any kind of extended computational work that uses the CPU, and that’s probably why you’re looking at these devices in the first place, it’s going to throttle. And that’s unacceptable to me,” Dave Lee pointed out.

The problem doesn’t sit with the Core i9, rather it’s the MacBook Pro’s inability to properly cool the chip, even though the laptop is hardly the slimmest around and should have enough space to handle the heat.

When the newer MacBook Pro was placed in a freezer, it outperformed last year’s model by a significant margin.

If Lee’s findings are typical, this would seriously affect the Core i9 MacBook Pro’s appeal to pro users.
