The all-new Mac Pro hit the shelves just recently, and professionals have already begun lining up (virtually) to acquire Apple’s latest desktop computer. The first units have made their way to reviewers, and the first couple of reviews are in, but we expect other details on the Mac Pro to surface in the near future.
Meanwhile, (future) new Mac Pro owners will be pleased to know that Other World Computing has quickly torn apart Apple’s latest redesigned desktop computer and found that the processor powering the machine is socketed and removable. This means that the computer allows for future upgrades.
MacRumors has quickly run through the prices of the available upgrades, and here is what Eric Slivka found (the prices are relative to the stock 3.7GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 with 10MB of L3 cache):
– 3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 12MB of L3 cache: +$500
– 3.0GHz 8-core Intel Xeon E5 with 25MB of L3 cache: +$2000
– 2.7GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5 with 30MB of L3 cache: +$3500
Using socketed processors is great news for professionals. In other desktop or portable systems, Apple had chosen to “lock” users into their purchased configuration, even with the professional MacBook Pro lineup.
Alongside the CPU, the RAM of the new system also appears to be upgradable, the OCM teardown reveals. But that’s about it.
