Pocket Teases How Saving Items Will Be Much Faster in iOS 8 [PIC]

For users of Pocket, the company has shared how its upcoming version 5.6, set to debut with iOS 8 on September 17, will make saving items much faster.

The new Pocket Share Option, once enabled, will add Pocket as an extension within mobile Safari’s native iOS menu. So the next time you want to save an item, it’s just one tap away, no matter what it is.

Also, when you save an item, you’ll be able to tag it right away once the ‘Saved!’ confirmation appears on screen.

Pocket also says you’ll be able to share to more apps, in particular apps that are also building share options for iOS 8. For those that use Pocket from multiple devices, the company says they will support Handoff, so you will be able to seamlessly read Pocket articles between your iOS and Mac devices in Yosemite.

As an avid user of Pocket, I can’t wait for this.

This is awesome! No more copy and pasting links, or using the Safari bookmarklet. Glad to see this isn’t a premium feature either, which is what I anticipated. The only annoying thing is apps need to build the Pocket extension into their app, unlike in Android where the functionality is built into the sharing options for the OS as whole. Luckily Pocket is widely used and most mainstream apps will build this in.

  • Yep! Can’t wait. I think over time more and more developers will integrate this in, it’s like how 1Password will be implemented into thirdparty apps, it’ll just take some time. The premium version just adds ‘suggested’ tags when you save items, as one added feature.

Very cool. I hope that Kindle comes out with something similar.

Also, this may get me using Safari more on my iDevices rather than Chrome.

Thankfully developers are amazing and probably have this update ready to launch in their iOS8 app updates! Do you know if these extensions are going to be built into other Apple apps like Mail? Or when you highlight a link, do you get extension options?

  • From what I see on their post, once you enabled it, it’ll be available even if the devs didn’t do anything special.

To save to Pocket from Safari and countless other apps, just enable the Pocket Share Option. Afterwards, Pocket will be included in the native iOS share menu, which is already used by thousands of apps.
