Taxi Drivers in Quebec File an Injunction Against the Government and Uber

toronto-taxi-protest.jpg

Last week, a report noted that Quebec’s taxi companies were furious after the government and Uber announced a one-year pilot project. The taxi industry called the move, which will allow Uber to operate in the province for another year, “a betrayal and a humiliation.”

A group that represents the taxi drivers in Quebec filed an injunction against the government over its plan to let Uber operate in the province. The group is asking the Quebec Superior court to cancel the agreement between the province and the ride-sharing company because they feel that Transport Minister Laurent Lessard has gone beyond his power.

In a statement Marc-Antoine Cloutier, a lawyer representing the group, said:

“We’re not going to let go until we win that fight.”

What do you think of the group’s decision to take Uber to court? Do you think they will succeed in getting Uber banned from Quebec? Let us know in the comments below.

They just want their license refunded

Hey Taxi drivers, don’t be scared, BE BETTER!

  • Jay

I guess they arent going to let go then…

EXACTLY!!! The cab industry here in Vancouver is horrible. The drivers are rude and it’s impossible to get one sometimes; still they are allowed to block access to competition?

This is done so that they can charge an exorbitant amount for a short ride. When I was taking a taxi, it cost me 3 dollars just to get me from my house to the entrance of the complex. Absolutely outrageous. The taxi companies are just run by greedy people. What can’t we have the same business model like the ones in Asia where they have the taxis, Uber and GrabCar. We need to shake up the taxi industry to rid them of their greed.

Same in Montréal! And the more they fight, the more the public will be for Uber. It is a great opportunity to grow and change the public’s view. But no, they keep complaining because they’ve lost their edge and their exclusivity like babys who’s lost their toy. They’ve abused us for 50 years, and now they wonder why we (the customers) don’t give a .. about their cause. Face the competition like men (read: women also) and try to get our trust back instead of whining

Yes you’re right… Private companies would also like to be entirely refunded for the R&D they’ve invested in for a new product, but guess what, no government would do that! Business need to develop something the customers will love. Same for any other customer oriented companies. Same for the taxi industry. The taxi licence is like a morgage and there are always risks when investing in something. Now because the rules have changed, they expect US (thru the gouvernment) to pay back the licences costs!!! What!!? I’m NOT paying a cent back!
