Apple CEO And Chinese Vice Premier Discuss User Information Protection

Tim Cook has visited Beijing to discuss user data security with top Chinese government officials, reports Reuters (via the official Xinhua news agency). The meeting took place in Zhongnanhai, the central authority’s seat. Tim Cook and Ma Kai, China’s vice premier, exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in information and communication fields, the local news agency says.

Interestingly enough, the two met just a day after Apple announced its awareness of the man-in-the-middle attack that targeted its iCloud Web service and affected Chinese users. GreatFire reported two days ago that Apple users in China are being targeted by hackers looking to collect Apple credentials and private data stored on the iCloud service.

To collect such info, the hackers, who are allegedly backed by the Chinese government, although the latter denies that, have been redirecting users to a website that looks similar to the official iCloud Web page.

Since then, Apple has published a guide helping users to identify whether they are connected securely.

GreatFire told Reuters that Apple apparently managed to reroute user data on Tuesday in order to circumvent the hack.
