Apple Price Cuts USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 Accessories and More For Rest of 2016 [u]

In a surprise move, Apple has slashed the price of a numerous accessories for new MacBook Pro users, in what appears to be a gesture to help new customers transition to #donglelife.

Here’s what Apple told The Verge and numerous other news outlets in a statement:

“We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem. Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple’s USB-C adapters and cables.”

Here’s what’s on sale, with price drops shown in USD, followed by current CAD pricing in brackets:

  • USB-C to traditional USB adapter from $19 to $9 ($10 CAD)
  • Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from $49 to $29 ($35 CAD)
  • USB-C to Lightning cable (1 meter) from $25 to $19 ($25 CAD)
  • USB-C to Lightning cable (2 meters) from $35 to $29 ($35 CAD)
  • Multiport adapter with HDMI, USB, and USB-C from $69 to $49 ($59 CAD)
  • Multiport adapter with VGA, USB, and USB-C from $69 to $49 ($59 CAD)

Apple’s USB-C charging cables or power adapters are not part of the discounts. Also, third-party USB-C peripherals are set to see a price drop by 25% in the US, but we’re not sure what that reflects in Canada.

These discounted prices are available at Apple retail stores and the online store, until the end of 2016. Let us know what other discounts you’re seeing in the Canadian online store.

Also, if you purchased these at full price–contact Apple for a refund of the difference.

And by the way, you can price match a lot of these at Best Buy. I price matched the USB-C to USB adapter. Original price $25, new price $10 ($8.50 after price match).

  • Thanks! We were busy compiling a list but you beat us to the punch. We will update our article.

Also, if you already purchased them at the original price, Apple will reimburse the difference. I did that and called them. Process was smooth and I’ll get diff credited to my card.

  • Yes, good point, forgot to mention that. Need to call in myself!

  • Salinger

Does anyone else not find it absolutely disgusting that to connect your 2016 iPhone to your 2016 MacBook, you need to buy a $35 (now the “bargain” price of $25) extra cable? …and Apple’s cables are uncharacteristically crap quality.

These prices were outrageous, now they’re down to ridiculous. Clearly, this is a huge admission that Apple misstepped with the new MacBook Pros. If their nonsensical statement on the reason behind the price drop was anything close to true, they’d have done this upon release of the MB Pro, not after a week of near unanimous criticism.

The market will probably speak for itself and many people will buy computers that offer these ports.

  • Si2k78

SD card reader dongle $52. Ouch. An SD card slot is not a legacy connector, Apple. Such Arrogance.

  • hlna55

It seems my perspective is certainly not unique. I’m only glad I didn’t wait for the madness and moved on 6 months ago. Isn’t Apple listening to the consumer??? They are so determined to be different in a desperate attempt to “innovate” they completely forgot the core qualitities of why people went to Macs in the first place

We realize now that we may have screwed up.
