Google iPhone Voice Recognition Application = Best App EVER!

Share:

When I first posted about Google’s iPhone Mobile App getting an update to include voice recognition last Friday I got us all excited for no reason. Why? Well, that’s because the update never came until late yesterday evening (rumor was that it was Apple’s fault for the delay and Apple says it was Google’s fault–go figure)! I finally got my hands on the update and I must say this app is truly amazing.

How to Get the Google iPhone Voice Recognition Application on your iPhone

For starters, I first heard about the release of the voice update via Twitter. I immediately turned to the iPhone App Store but did not find any “updates” available. What gives? Well, in order to fix this anomaly all I had to do was delete the app and then reinstall–PRESTO!

Once installed I launched the app and used it immediately. There are two ways to use it. Just bring the iPhone up to your ear and speak, or press the microphone button and talk into the iPhone. Out of every phrase, keyword, and sentence that came out of my mouth the Google app identified it correctly. This app is by far the best iPhone app to date. It has made searching for information so much easier on the iPhone. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Check out these screenshots for more info:

Check out this video from Google demonstrating how the app works:

Honestly this is the coolest app yet for the iPhone. It’s so easy to use and it’s extremely practical too (unlike some of the other apps that filling up your homescreen!). It takes full advantage of your current location to find anything around you quickly and efficiently. So, what do you think of it so far?

It’s fantastic, however I still would like to assign it to the home button just like QuickGold (I believe) and then it would be the best application to date.

I think it is one of the best for sure. Searching is so much easier and it even makes it easier/unecessary to type URLs. I love it. It has pretty good voice recognition. I wish it could be integrated with Safari, but that’s only a dream.

I like it too – only problem is that I have an accent and as a result I have to really slow down and speak each word clearly!! My accent is not very thick and is a mixed British & Indian accent! My fake Southern drawl seems to be recognised better! 🙂

Now, here’s an app that I might have to put as one of my Home buttons… a first for a third party app!

Why would you say that without explaining why?

I’ve been using it this morning, and surprisingly it does save a lot of time typing!

  • I’ve used it a few times today and it’s worked great.

Anyone know of other speech-to-text apps for the iPhone that work well?

I will admit that this app is quite nifty, and Google has done a great job; however, is it really necessary? You also mention that it’s extremely practical. What if I want to search for pornography in private at the back of the bus? NOT practical. Are you all really that lazy to type a few words?

Also… It doesn’t recognize the word “velociraptor” very well.

Very very cool app. This app really has a significant everyday usability factor.

Quite accurate for me. Picked up my test search term, “antidisestablishmentarianism” the first time!

Usability: say “showtimes” for local movie showtimes. Say business names like Starbucks or Sushi to find directions or phone numbers, say “15 US dollars to Canadian” or “30 celsius to farenheit” to convert it, say model numbers of products like “Lg 42lg LCD reviews” as you shop, find restaurant reviews. There’s tons of possibilities.

Does it work for voice dialing? Or is this something entirely different?

Does the iphone have any decent voice recognition apps for voice dialing? (eg. “Call Jim”)

I agree with that… considering that if you use the regular “typed” search that they return results from your address book, this is kinda a confusing omission.

    The reason could be twofold:
    1) It is difficult for the voice recognition engine to recognize names! (Try searching for Grzegorz, or some of the funky last names you have in your address book!”)
    2) Apple may be planning to add that functionality to the address book, and Apple has been notorious for preventing people from releasing apps which may duplicate functionality in current or future iPhone-included applications.

It doesn’t voice dial, but there are a couple that do. I think one is called Say Who, but I don’t know how well it works.

So far, I’m 50/50. When it works, its impressive. When it screws up a search, its way faster to just type it. I find that anything atypical it won’t find. If you want to do “demo” searches like “how long is the nile river”, it will work, anything more specific and it has a hard time with many of the words.

Forget about names (ie: person’s names or company names). Are people really that slow on typing on the iPhone 😉
