Microsoft Bing iPhone App Released

Share:

Microsoft was once at the pinnacle of technological innovation, but now they seem to have become stagnant, like your New Year’s resolution from last year (what’s that? It’s almost 2010?!). Microsoft launched their own search engine Bing (way too late) to compete with Google and now it’s available for the iPhone.

Bing iPhone App Now Available for Download–It’s Free

The Bing iPhone app was released yesterday and it’s a free download in the App Store. There is a Bing daily image on the homescreen that will keep things fresh. The app is very straightforward and allows searching the web, images, movies, maps, Businesses, News, and Directions. On top of that, there is a voice feature just like the Google Mobile app.

However, after trying to test the voice powered search feature, the app crashed immediately. This situation repeated itself and I still have not been able to try it out. Hmm…I guess we could call this a mini BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) moment.

There are some positives though. The web and image search is very accurate and easy to use. Photos are laid out in a very easy to browse format. Finding directions is also possible, although I find the map images to be downright ugly compared to Google Maps. If you’re looking for a great way to search images on the web, definitely check out the Bing iPhone app.

Better late then never for Microsoft to release a search engine.
I still never even used Bing before… lol I always just Google.ca

Ballmer is a crazy guy. His video clips on the net always make me laugh but he does have a good points.

Hmm. I tried it and it works perfectly, even the voice feature without crashing. I haven't tried the google app (mostly because all reviews say it just defaults to opening safari for everything), but the voice feature in bing isn't all that accurate. It's also frustrating that when I go into maps and say “boundary and first”, it accurately displays what i said but can't find it. What's that all about? Google finds it. It would be lame to have to say “boundary street and first avenue”. On the positive side, the interface is beautiful and the integrated web browser seems faster than safari! Is that possible? I thought it would use safari as an in-app API. Maybe they've done some kind of optimization…

  • I agree the app does look very sleek. The picture of the day keeps it very
fresh. Their maps app definitely needs some work!!

Agreed! Since they have their own independent application that isn't tied into the firmware (like Google Maps), it sure would be nice if in their proceeding updates they add a feature like Google Latitude, except with automatic, regular updates (say every 15 seconds) and perhaps even add a push feature to request friends to start the application and reveal their location. It could use the MSN portal authentication architecture like Hotmail/MSN/etc.
