Review: BodyGuardz Ace Pro Case & Pure 2 Screen Protector

01670D6F-525C-406E-ABEF-DE2DBE3DF855Following the introduction of the iPhone 7 this past September, many accessory makers are now offering cases and screen protectors for these new devices. One such company is BodyGuardz of Draper, Utah. Founded in 2002, they offer a wide range of cases and screen protectors for a broad range of Apple devices and have recently started shipping their iPhone 7 offerings. Two of those, the Ace Pro iPhone 7 case, and the Pure 2 Premium Glass Screen Protector, are the subject of this review.

The BodyGuardz Ace Pro iPhone 7 cases come in clear or transparent TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) and features a sleek, low profile design that is lined with patented Unequal shock absorbing technology which transfers and absorbs impact force from the corners to sides of the case. Unequal is the same technology that professional athletes use on the field for impact protection, so if it’s good enough to offer protection from a 335 pound NFL defensive lineman, you can be confident it will protect your iPhone without issue.

The Ace Pro iPhone 7 case material is semi-flexible which makes it easy to put on and take off without problems while being durable enough to take the sort of abuse a phone might accidentally be subjected to. It features a soft bumper with rigid, transparent back that feels good in the hand and isn’t slippery, and has a certain “grippiness” that makes you feel confident that the phone won’t slide out of your hand. The case has an open area in the back for the camera and flash, and a solid top and sides. A raised bezel protects the front of device while the bottom of the phone is covered, with openings for the speaker and Lightning port.

A small opening allows easy access to the Mute switch, while the volume rockers and sleep/wake button are protected by clear pressure points in the side of the case. These buttons require a bit of pressure to adjust, but nothing too excessive. Overall, the case is reasonably thin and will not add significant bulk to the phone. Due to it being made of polyurethane, the case is effectively waterproof, so if you accidentally drop your iPhone 7 in a puddle, you won’t have to worry about the case being damaged.

It should be noted that while the opening for the Lightning port will accommodate the Apple Lightning cable without issue, third party cables may not fit depending on their design, and many Lightning docks will be unable to access the Lightning port on your iPhone (a common occurrence with many protective cases) due to the case blocking the dock connector. If you normally plug your iPhone into the Apple Lightning cable this won’t be an issue, but otherwise it’s something to consider.

IMG_0002For an extra degree of protection, the Ace Pro iPhone 7 case can be combined with the BodyGuardz Pure 2 Premium Glass Screen Protector, the first glass screen protector in the US to use Aluminosilicate tempered glass from Corning. This innovative type of glass allows it to be extremely thin, yet more protective than the regular glass found in other screen protectors.

The BodyGuardz Pure 2 Premium Glass Screen Protector is 5 times more scratch-resistant than regular glass protectors, offers a 25% increase in drop performance, and 25% lower visibility of scratches. It is precision cut to cover the entire screen with the exception of the Home button and will easily protect your screen from accidental damage. The Pure 2 Premium Glass Screen Protector features free lifetime replacements, so if you do damage it you can request free replacements for the life of your device, you just need to pay for shipping (currently $12.99 to Canada).

The Ace Pro iPhone 7 case is extremely durable and protects the iPhone very well. While testing the iPhone 7 Plus case for this review I accidentally dropped my iPhone on the sidewalk while walking my dog, a fall of around 3.5 feet. The iPhone landed on the top right corner and then fell face down on the concrete, however due to my use of the Ace Pro case and Pure 2 screen protector there was zero damage to the phone or the screen.

The only evidence to show that the phone had been dropped was a tiny scuff on the corner of the case where it had landed on the sidewalk. Without the case and screen protector, it is very likely that my iPhone would have suffered noticeable damage, so I’m happy to have had the protection offered by the Ace Pro and Pure 2, and would definitely recommend these products to anyone who asks.

The Ace Pro iPhone 7 case comes in Smoke/Black, Clear/Gray, Pink/White, and Blue/White color combinations and costs $34.95 USD for both the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, while the Pure 2 Screen Protector costs $39.95 USD for the iPhone 7 and $44.95 USD for the iPhone 7 Plus. All products can be ordered directly from the BodyGuardz website.
