Telus Optik TV PVR iPhone App Review

So a while back we switched over to Telus Optik from Shaw for our internet and cable service at home. Telus had some aggressive pricing for their new Optik service in our area so we jumped ship away from Shaw.

About a month ago Telus released an iPhone app for Optik subscribers to control their PVR. This app will allow you to have pretty much full control of your PVR right from your iPhone. I decided to give this app a shot and see just how well it performs. Let’s get on with the review!

Telus Optik TV PVR iPhone App Review

App description:

Optik TV™ Remote Recording allows you to schedule and manage your HD PVR recordings from your iPhone. You’ll never miss your favourite programs again.

Features
• Quickly record any program you want from anywhere.
• Customized Guide displays only the channels you are subscribed to.
• View full program and cast information.
• Search by program title, actors, new programs and/or HD programs.
• View your scheduled recordings and what you have already recorded.
• Set priority for scheduled recordings or delete existing recorded programs.

After downloading this free app from the App Store, your next step is to create an account via your Telus PVR. To do this, grab your PVR remote and press MENU–>Recordings–>Remote Recording. Go to Create Account and enter your email address.

You’ll receive an email to verify your account, which will contain a confirmation code. You enter this code into the Telus Optik iPhone app.

After setting everything up, the app is very responsive and has a nice, easy layout. You can see your listings and choose to record any show. You can also delete existing recordings and search for shows. When selecting a show to record, you have the option to quick record or set a series recording. This app is awesome.

The search also works extremely well too. Check it out below:

There are some major gripes with this app though. Every time you load the app the listings start at the very beginning, so scrolling can be time consuming (although navigating with this iPhone app is faster than using the PVR guide). Also, there should be an option to show only the channels you subscribe to, just like on your Telus PVR.

Telus has done well with this app and it’s a must have download for all Telus Optik subscribers. Bell has had their remote PVR app out mid May of 2010. We’re still waiting for a decent PVR iPhone app from Shaw.

Are you using the Telus Optik iPhone app? How do you like it?

I would kill for Optik in my area. 🙁

I wonder if Rogers is planning something like that here in Ontario. Probably not, as this would be a handy innovation for customers, and the only thing Rogers is innovating these days are new fees to squeeze out of their already beleaguered customers.

im sure they will release one, it’s probably going to be a year and a half later like all their phone releases (minus iphone)

Too bad it’s Telus though. Almost everyone I have spoken to in our area is getting away from Telus and moving to Shaw, especially since their phone service became available. Seems like almost everything Telus touches turns to crap. Personally, I have boycotted them for life.

I just switched to Telus a couple of months ago, and have been waiting for this to be released. Tried it out this morning, and it works pretty good. At least good enough for its intended purpose.

The only dislike I have is that you can’t jump to a channel and time, it take a few seconds to load, and then it has to reload if you go more than a few hours into the future. Should be able to select by date, time, channel, etc.

Bell’s PVR app is for Satellite though they don’t have one for FibeTV yet 🙁

I would love for more tv providers in Toronto than cable (Rogers) or satellite (Bell, Shaw Direct) 🙁
We need more IPTV options out here, like you guys on the west coast

i just switched with a sweet retention deal: 1 year, $30 a month for Optic TV, high speed internet, Phone

Bell has Fibe Tv in Toronto and Montreal

I switched to Telus Optik from Shaw about a month ago. I downloaded the app, run on iOS4. It is great, but watch your battery life. It would be great if you could view by channel (eg touch the channel and see the listings for the next few hours of just that channel). It is fairly responsive, but on refresh of the next set of data it scrolls back up to the top. HD is in the 600s so its a scroll exercise to see the new listings.
Also the New and HD setting for Search is not intuitive, and doesn’t seem to work consistently. The Series recording settings do not include “new episodes only” option like the PVR does.

It seems that one cannot change the recording settings using the pvr remote an tv listing of the recordings though, and not all series recording options are available in the app.

Can you transfer those recordings to your device? I wouldn’t mind watching them from the phone or pad.
