ZAGG Origin 2-in-1 Bluetooth Speaker System [Review]

I’m not much of an audiophile but when it comes to listening to music I know what I like and don’t like. I like something that doesn’t sound flat and something with a little kick to the bass, something that isn’t always present with portable Bluetooth speakers. So I was really excited to try the Origin 2-in-1 Speaker System from ZAGG. I can honestly say, to date this is my favourite speaker I’ve reviewed.

What the Origin is – as the name suggests – is two separate speakers that you can combine into one. The larger speaker gives you full robust audio that you can actually tune to your liking by increasing or decreasing the treble and bass. Because of its angled sides, when you put it in a room you don’t have to worry about sitting just in front of it to get the maximum sound quality. The smaller speaker is also the same shape.

A nice feature with the ZAGG Origin is the ability to wire in audio from a source with a 3.5mm jack. For instance, this allows you to listen to music from your computer using the big speaker and then separate audio from your mobile device using the smaller speaker. The bigger speaker itself has to have the smaller speaker docked with it in order for it to be used with Bluetooth and the larger speaker must be plugged in for use. So it really is a speaker you set in one place and leave it there. That’s not to say you can’t move it around if you want.

So when it comes to portability, that’s where the smaller speaker shines. It simply detaches from the back of the larger one. It’s held there by some strong magnets, and the smaller one also charges when docked. The smaller speaker is very compact and easy to carry around. You can easily slip it into a bag and take it anywhere. As for the sound, it’s definitely not as robust as the larger speaker, but it’s still really good. It’s on par or even a little better than the previous Bluetooth speakers I’ve reviewed.

The ZAGG Origin comes with a small remote control. Unfortunately it’s plastic and cheap feeling compared to the speakers. But, it works as you’d expect. The remote is how you adjust the bass and treble. You of course can also change the volume and move through your tracks. Sadly the remote doesn’t work with the smaller speaker, but since you’ll be using it mostly on the go with your mobile device, you can simply adjust volume and select tracks with your mobile device.

Overall both speakers are really good, but when you combine them together you get a great sound system that should meet all your audio needs. If you’re in the market for a Bluetooth speaker make sure you consider the Origin from ZAGG. Yes, it’s a little more expensive with a price tag of $250. But you’re getting two speakers in one. A desktop speaker and portable speaker that both sound great.
