Whatever I’ve done to this string file has just whacked out the text in the sound settings area but still not changed the name of the tone. Can’t seem to figure out the name change.

Hey, I’m having a problem with this. I follow the steps exactly and I get the sound to come out how I want it but I can’t actually change the name of the tone. It’s a normal name “Squeeze” that I want to use for the tone, but the regular “Chime” is still showing up even after restarting the phone.

I tried exactly as per the instructions. Also changed the extension to my main folder to “.theme” as the other folders in that destination have it. Neither worked. Also tried putting in the Sounds.strings file more alternatives as:

“ALTERNATE_1? = “Squeeze1”;
“ALTERNATE_2? = “Squeeze2”;
“ALTERNATE_3? = “Squeeze3”;

But that didn’t work either. Any ideas?

I’m having difficulty getting this to work on my iPhone 3G (4.2.1). I used the three steps below. I’m not sure if the path structure is correct for “MySMS.theme”. Any suggestions?
1) I copied the Sounds.strings from /var/stash/Applications/Preferences.app/English.lproj/
2) Edited the string value of ALTERNATE_5, using plist Editor for Windows
3) Copied the update Sounds.strings file in to /var/stash/Themes.jHxfiv/MySMS.theme/Folders/Preferences.app/.lproj/

For anyone having trouble creating the string file:

1. Go to /var/stash/Applications/Preferences.app/English.lproj/
2. Find Sounds.strings
3. Copy the file and paste it into your en.lproj folder that is in your theme folder.
4. Open the file (on my Mac I used Property List Editor which made it really easy to edit), change the strings you wish, then save the file.

ALTERNATE_1 through ALTERNATE_5 are the corresponding strings for the SMS tone names.
