How to Change your SIM Card Number on Rogers for iPhone 4

Did you purchase an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple? If you did, then you’re going to have to change your SIM card number on Rogers.com, as your SIM won’t fit into the microSIM slot on the iPhone 4. You could cut your original SIM down to size, but it’s easier to just change your SIM card number on Rogers.com (or by giving them a call).

Rogers.com is…how can we say this…not the most “user friendly” website. It took me a while to navigate through the maze of menus and buttons to change my SIM card info online. So hopefully this will help those out who need it.

Let’s get started with this quick tutorial.

1. Login to your My Rogers account on Rogers.com
2. Click on “Manage my Wireless”

3. Click on “Hardware”

4. Click on “Change SIM Card”

5. Enter your old SIM card number (located on the back of the SIM itself). Below, enter in your new microSIM card number (located on the back of the microSIM).

6. Click “Change” and wait…and BAM! It should be updated immediately. My iPhone 4 was up and running right away!

If you’re on Bell or Telus, I haven’t used their website services for changing SIM cards, but let us know if that option is available. Let me know how this works for you!

Hey Gary, I have a question, right now I have two iPhones, 3G and the 4. Both have sim cards in them. My 4 is the one that is activated right now and the 3G displays no service. I was wondering if I could go on my Rogers and enter in the 3G sim card number so that it's activated. Am I able to constantly swap the two phones? I work in a dangerous environment and I don't want my 4 to get damaged so I was thinking to just swap to old sim (3G) while at work and when I'm home or out, swap back to the 4.

Would this be damaging to anything? I asked the person at Rogers and they said I will “fry” the sim card if I do it a lot.

Thanks

You're welcome! It's Gary btw lol

Interesting scenario. I honestly haven't tried that, as this was also my
first time switching SIM card numbers online. Another way to bypass this
would be to get a microSIM to SIM adapter. Then you can just switch them
physically and not risk anything “frying”.

I'll look into this and see what I can find out!

I am about to come to my uncle's wedding in september. From Romania to Saskatchewan. I would like to purchase the Iphone4 from there, unlocked. Do you think they will sell it to me? and will it really work with my big sim card, cut by me at home?

Was I supposed to go through Rogers to get it all switched over to my unlocked iPhone or did I just f*** myself?

It took about 45 minutes for mine to “activate” after doing the online switch on launch day afternoon, but it sure was easier than having to call Rogers or go into the Rogers store. Internet services FTW!!

I thought ahead and ordered the microsim to sim adapters with the cut out template for your existing sim a while ago. They came from Romania of all places. Lol. I found that they were difficult to get in and out of the iPhone and next to impossible with my unlocked razr2. They have little “ledges” in them so your micro won't fall through. I found it made the combination of the two thick. I shaved those ledges off and now it works like a charm. Just have to be carefull when lining up to insert into your phone as it will fall through.

Ok. I'm a little we Todd it when it comes to this SIM shite. I've got a few extra iPhone 4's from the Apple store unlocked. They gave me the free SIM's but didn't do anything with them since I won't be using them obviously. Would these Rogers SIM's be useless to anyone without a Rogers account?

Yes- but whomever buys the phones can get a bell or telus, etc sim card for $5-$10 from that carrier noproblem

That'll work, I used to forge same thing with my 3G to 3GS. Also, I've found a website, though I forget why it is, that selling the Sim Adapters for the Micro-Sim to normal size Sim. It works great, I just trimmed down my Fido Sim card to fit, with no problems. I've never “fried” my card, but I guess apparently there's a risk in doing so according to the Rogers representative that you were talking to. I've been using the same Sim card for two years now though, and have never had a problem with it, however. I think your idea of swapping the Sims is a good one

I dont really understand all of this either…. if i get the 14 with NO carrier at all, will my wifi still work for it? I mean there is free texting apps… and skype for that matter… will that work on my home wifi? And Sasktel is saying their new network wont be for any unlocked phones from apple… is there any way to sneak around this i wonder?? lol

From the Apple store I received a 'universal' SIM card that you can detach either as a regular or mini SIM card. I detached it as a mini SIM but also kept the additional surrounding plastic that would be needed to make it a regular card. I use the latter as an adapter when I want to insert the SIM into my 3G. It works like a charm. 🙂

Been trying to do this for a few hours now, keep getting the message:

Unfortunately, we are unable to update your SIM card at this time. Please try again later.

@ Keith: if you bought a phone through rogers for no contract, it's still locked to Rogers. However, if you bought a phone through the apple store, they authorize the micro sim they give you for whatever carrier you choose. then all you had to do was go onto your myrogers account and change the sim pin. that way you could theoretically change carriers if you so wanted.

I do agree though, i had to google the information and then i found a iPhone 4 unlocked activation FAQ on rogers website. once i figured that out it was a piece of cake

Once i switched Sims from my 3Gs to my i4 it took a little bit for the system to switch it over. i did a complete Full settings reset and that did the trick for me

I'm with Fido. I went ahead and checked if it is possible to change my SIM card number online via fido.ca. The option is available as well. I just want to make sure if this means that I can also activate my new SIM card online instead of calling Fido Customer Service? Thanks!

How do non-contract iPhone 4 users have data plans? Is it worth buying the unlocked iPhone 4 and trying to organize a phone plan with SIM card and data plan, if possible…? Thanks.

I bought it at apple no contract and unlocked. I asked if I just go through iTunes or if I had to go to Rogers to get everything switched over and the guy said I had to go through Rogers. But I made sure to ask for unlocked.

iPhone 4 is sold out everywhere in Canada. Not sure how many more they will have in SASK in the next batch but if you have atleast 3 weeks then you can buy online from Apple.ca and have it shipped to your address in Canada. Or i can sell you the extra iPhone 4 32GB unlocked that I have but it will cost you.

Goodluck!

I've been calling around (here in Calgary) and I've been told that all iphones in Canada are unlocked, even those sold through carriers. Can anyone confirm? I've called three different Rogers stores all saying the same thing.

100% wrong.

Ed
Ed

Weird. They specifically said that with a 3 year commitment the phone is unlocked. Are they just trying to sign me to a long term deal? Each one said (independent of each other) that every iPhone shipped in Canada is unlocked. I called a Rogers shop, kiosk, and a Wireless Unlimited.

 Xaroc

It might not be a trick. it might be that they dont fully understand what is going on with the situation. that happens a LOT with the kids who work at these carriers, also Bestbuy, Futureshop. ect.

Ex
Ex

What do you think?

Put yourself in their position. Would you, as the carrier, allow unlocked phones on 3 year contracts? Whats the point of the contract then?

dave

I asked rogers this, and their response was “It seems that an existing PAYG account cannot be used with an unlocked iPhone 4”.

dave
dave

No, you cannot use an iphone 4 on PAYG – I asked rogers this and they said “It seems that an existing PAYG account cannot be used with an unlocked iPhone 4”. So basically you have to either pay min $60/month for a voice+data+callerid contract, or cut your old SIM card.

headlesshobo
headlesshobo

it wouldn't matter though would it? you'd still have to pay for the contract regardless of whether the phone was locked or unlocked. and even if you switched to a different carrier and just swapped sims, you'd still have to pay for the contract to your old carrier. and if you cancelled, the cancellation fee would make your phone cost the same as an unlocked one anyways. so what's the point?

Ex
Ex

Yes, but once the contract is up, the carrier still has you locked via the phone. You can ONLY use their network.

Of course My Rogers doesn’t work 98% of the time, so more than likely you’ll have to call Rogers, as I am doing right now.

Thanks for the info. Does changing the sim card number affect your contract terms at all (expiry date, data plan)?
