My Rogers iPhone 3G Battery Life Issue…Resolved!

The Rogers iPhone 3G Battery Life Saga…

Remember when I posted about how to increase your iPhone 3G battery life? Well, part of my reason for writing about that was because my iPhone 3G was suffering from some dismal battery life, right out of the box. I even calibrated the battery and it did nothing.

I also wrote about my saga in getting a replacement iPhone 3G from Rogers. What I did was dial 611 on my iPhone to call Rogers. I then was forwarded to the “iPhone Support Team”, where my situation was diagnosed over the phone (I could hear the CSR flipping through pages of a manual, LOL). We agreed a replacement was to be sent out right away. Awesome right? Think again!

During a follow up call to check up on my order, the order itself had not bee fully “submitted”. The original CSR failed badly in completing the order of my replacement. Luckily I had a very helpful CSR (they are out there, believe it or not) alleviate the situation and place my order for real. The iPhone arrived yesterday via the UPS and I was off to do some immediate testing.

Pictures of my “New” iPhone 3G from Rogers

I was assured that I was going to be receiving a brand new iPhone 3G to replace my unit. What arrived has made me doubt my unit as “new”. Within the box there return shipping labels were included along with a PAPER CLIP in a small zip lock bag. The image looked like it was from the first gen iPhone days. I have 15 days to send my original iPhone 3G back to Rogers, or else they will charge $630 to my account!

For starters, the box the iPhone was in was tiny. It was about 1 inch thick and looked like a first generation iPhone box. Was my iPhone 3G refurbished?? The plastic was still on the phone itself, but did notice a small scuff mark on the back of the phone (maybe this is foreshadowing those mysterious cracks that people are talking about online)! !$*%@!! Check out these pictures to see what I mean (The screen protector is slightly off center because I had removed part of it):

The 2nd iPhone 3G Battery Test Results

My initial battery life would only provide about 3.5 hours of usage and 6 hours of standby before I’d see the 20% battery remaining pop up. However I noticed the battery life improved as the week progressed. By the end of the week one test resulted in 4.5 hours of usage and 14 hours of standby before dying a slow death–and that was with EDGE used to save battery too.

The battery on the “new” replacement iPhone 3G showed that it was fully charged right out of the box. However, I decided to give it a quick 1 hour charge to boost it a bit, then put it right to the test. The improved battery life I soon discovered shocked me completely. The battery lasted 6 hours and 4 mins of usage (3G was enabled the ENTIRE time, WiFi, GPS, email was set to fetch every 15 mins, some YouTube, lots of Safari) and 22 hours and 20 minutes of standby!

Here’s a photo diary of my usage/standby times throughout the test….

This is a massive improvement, considering I was unable to even last more than a day on standby with 3G enabled on the first iPhone 3G! Once I get a full charge plus the “trickle” charge, I guarantee I’m going to get even higher numbers than this!

Conclusion: Should I call Rogers to Ask for a Replacement iPhone 3G?

If you are suffering from pathetic battery life on your iPhone 3G, I would strongly consider giving Rogers a call and voicing your concerns. Don’t be afraid. We’ve all put some good money into this phone plus most of us have signed a 3 year contract. It’d be nice to have our 3G batteries working strong from the start, as eventually over time the battery will lose its charge. There is no harm in calling. Tell them your story and ask for a replacement. I would’ve gotten mine sooner if the order was probably placed.

So there you have it. That’s my battery story and I’m sticking to it. Even though there’s a tiny scuff on the back, I’m going to keep it. The battery life is much improved compared to my original unit. Now all I gotta do is slap on an invisibleSHIELD to protect my iPhone 3G (enter my contest!) and I’ll be a happy camper. :)

Anyone else have some iPhone 3G battery stories to share? How long have you been able to milk your battery life for? Numbers people, let’s hear numbers!

    A paper clip? really?

Sounds like me and my first gen iphone!

After having almost the same issues with my iPhone, i contacted Rogers – they said they’d send one out (on the 18th). I called back on the 26th and it for some unknown reason wasn’t sent out. I called again today and was, for the very first time, informed that if for any reason they felt that the issues i was having were caused by usage and not by poor battery life, i would be held liable for the cost of a brand new phone.

    Personally i’m a little frightened by that…
although i may or may not be now considering not returning the first phone when i receive the replacement and taking a gander on craigslist, if they’re only going to charge $630 as a replacement fee.

I also had battery problems. I called Rogers and they said they will send me a replacement iphone but I couldn’t wait so I cancelled my contract (within 15 days) and went into a Rogers store to buy a new iphone. After I left the Rogers store, I decided to go into an Apple store to speak to one of their tech assistance. He had a look at my iphone and said that the battery was defective and replaced it. So now I have 2 brand new iphones (1 from Rogers and 1 from Apple). Then when I got home, I had a message from a Rogers CSR apologizing about my faulty iPhone and that they have sent a replacement iphone and I should receive it in 2-3 business days. I also received an email from Rogers with the tracking number. So in a few days I will have 3 iphones. Crazy!

What would a reasonable man do in my position?

Ok so you cancelled your contract with Rogers on the first Iphone. That will be $400.00 for early termination fee plus $30.00 for the first month of data plan.
You got another new iphone at Rogers so that could be $199 or $299 for either the 8GB of 6GB respectively. Plus you cannot buy just the iphone itself without signing a new contract, right or am I wrong? About Apple replacing you a new Iphone…is this true?? I thought Apple stores at Canadian stores don’t actually sell the Iphone and will direct you to either Rogers or Fido? So if you’re saying you got a replacement from the Apple store you are very lucky. So now Rogers are going to send you a new replacement but I am sure you will need to send back your old Iphone within 15 days or else pay $630. I think at the end you will have only 2 Iphones and you may have to pay some $$$. Good luck.

Yes The Apple Store at Eaton Centre (Downtown Toronto) have stock but they do not sell them. They are keeping stock for replacement. While I was there about 2 other guys got replacements. The have all 3 types in stock.

Not sure what will happen with my 3 iPhones. The first contract I was able to cancel within 15 days so they will not charge me the $400 ecf. So all I have to do is return the phone and get my credit back and pay 14 days of usage.

I will refuse the 3rd iphone when UPS delivers it so I think at the end I will be back to square 1 with a 16GB iPhone 3G. 2 reasons why I did it this way:
1 – I did not want to wait 10-15 days for a replacement. I wanted it now.
2 – I did not want a refurb phone that came in a generic brown box and a paper clip.

I do have a question maybe somebody here can answer. The Rogers Store put me on this plan called Employee Price Plan. Now when I log on to My Rogers Online, its says this:

    Discount(s)
Value Pack 1 Month Credit – To be removed on 30/08/2008
Monthly Plan Credit – To be removed on 30/08/2008
Monthly Plan Credit – To be removed on 30/07/2011 (WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?)
    33.3% Value Pack Add-on Disc.

What does the Monthly Plan Credit – To be removed on 30/07/2011 means?

ok so it seems like everyone is having a problem with the batteries in iphones. i TOO am having the same issue and i have spoke with rogers CSR and they told me couple of steps i have to go thru to replace my “defective” iphone with the “new” iphone, or so he said to me. apparently Apple is very strict in replacing the iphones and unless they see that it actually is defective, they wont replace it. So now after i have talked to rogers CSR, i have to reset everything in my iphone and do the restore and see what happen, and if it still has a bad battery, they will be shipping a new one to me.

I called Rogers, said I had a problem with my battery and pretty much was told… “Tell me about it! Battery life is horrible on all of them. It’s no defect.” Then I was also told, “We might carry another model of the iPhone in the future that will have better life, which you could buy.” Well geez… No replacement for me. Thanks Rogers!

Well, I listened to the various reports of power issues here and must admit that this site is an amazing resource. Because we are mostly all iPhone users, and many of us own 3G phones, it is great to pool our experiences together in order to determine if we are having unusual phone behaviour. They are so new, there is no other way to find out what is “normal”.

I thought that 2 hours and 30 minutes of talk/usage time and a 6 hour standby time to 10% (from fully trickle-charged) was normal. My reading prooved that it wasn’t.

I thought that Fido (I went the doggy path) was probably selling most of their phones and also felt that they are so new that the support structure probably wasn’t in place yet with Fido for RMA phones… Because of this, I decided.. “I’m going to try contacting the manufacturer to see what all this hype is about apple service.”

Enter the Apple Store (the physical one in Vancouver). I phoned them up and went through the menus to the iPhone 3G support. First, the recording was totally appologetic because they had “extreme call volume” and the message continued on to say that estimated wait times were “between 5 and 10 minutes”.

Have they ever tried to call Telus? I mean honestly… If I’d EVER called Telus and only waited 5 to 10 minutes, I’d have had a heart attack and died.

After 3 minutes, a cheery sounding guy answered the phone and confirmed that I owned an iPhone and was looking for assistance. I explained to him that I am a technologist and that my company is actually an authorized mac service centre for internal support (no, we are not open to the public…) I explained that I was a member of this forum (mentioned the IPHONEINCANADA.CA name, hope I didn’t violate a copyright). He said that he was familiar with the site! (way to go iPhone Fan).

Anyway, I explained that I’ve turned off all the transmission services from 3G to Wireless. Explained that I had to keep the bluetooth on, because I couldn’t function without my Jawbone. :)

His response was quick. “sounds like you’ve done everything possible. Are you able to get into the Apple Store in Vancouver. I have appointments for 8:15pm and 8:30pm tonight.” he asked me to hold for a moment while he confirmed that they had warranty units in stock.

When he returned, he explained that they did, and he had a phone put aside for me so that it would be there when I arrived. He gave me a reference number and explained that he was instructing the local service tech to simply “replace the phone” without question. He said they “might hook it up to run the diagnostics, just for their own records, but you will be leaving with a new phone.”

I said that I was worried about it being a repaired phone, as I’m fairly anal about having the phone in pristine condition. He assured me that there are not “reconditioned” phones available yet. The only difference between the phones will be that the service replacements don’t come in the fancy boxes with all the parts and accessories. These are just “phones in a plain box”.

He was right. The phone was new, with no scuffs or bumps. It had all the factory wrap on it.

The new phone? Wow… I’m totally amazed. I can use the phone for 6 hours, and get 1 day, 3 hours, and 35 minutes of standby and still not get the “20% warning”. This performance is FAR FAR better than before. Shockingly so.

So, thanks to everyone here for showing me that I had an issue. Having to charge the phone three times a day is NOT normal! :)

    Woot for iphoneincanada.ca!

I am not kidding when I say I had the exact same issue TODAY. I bought this phone less than a week ago, had a full charge at midnight, unplugged it, and in less than 7 hours, the phone was dead. I did not receive 1 call or 1 e-mail.

When I called Apple today in regards to this issue, they wanted me to pay $400 for the phone (hold only) and $30 for advanced replacement AFTER the gentleman yesterday convinced me to buy the Apple Care Protection Plan where, “we will send you a new phone if you have the problem.” Same problem and they did not even recognize the issue I had before they were telling me to shut off all my services and make it version 1. I said “no” and send me a new phone. They are in the process now and I should have it by Tuesday.

The best part is they TRIED to convince me 8 hours standby is completely normal with 3G turned on. I said not according to your website. They kept referring to this mystery “article” that stated 8 hours was normal. I kept referring to their own website. I even have a friend that bought their phone the same week and lives in the same apartment and her phone more than doubled my battery life.

With ll that said, I liked the article and how my last 2 days have mirrored the issues and frustrations felt by all. I KNOW the phone has horrible battery life compared to my previous BB but I knew that going into it. However, do not let Apple/Rogers/AT&T convince you to turn your NEW 3G into a Gen 1 phone. It is NOT. Make them send you a new one. Live long and prosperous.

Ryan, my discussion actually works for both the blogger and you. I would suggest calling back and demanding a new phone. Shoot, reference this article. I keep doing my own tests each night and finally got them to send me a new phone (hopefully new). If they have a store near you, call them and get it traded out. Do not let them tell you that 8-19 hours standby is ok. It is not. This is a PDA and needs to mirror the battery life of the blogger. If you go on Apple’s website under iPhone and tech, they give you not only the talk/standby times with the actually specs they run: 3G on, Wi-Fi off, etc. If yours do not come close, they should send you a new one. Hope this helps.

I phoned Fido. They told me that the Standby in Setting –> Genernal –> Usage –> Standby… is not the standby that the phone can last. They said the number it shows is how long the iphone is in standby mode since last recharge. My question now is … how do I know how much longer will my iphone last beside reading the green battery bar at the top ight corner ? And is the Fido sale rep is correct that the standby in iphone is showing how long the phone is standby but not the reminding standby time ?
    Thanks!
