Rogers iPhone 3G/3GS Cancellation Fees

Share:

I have received numerous emails on this subject, so today I will detail the cancellation policies for Rogers.

For Fido cancellation fees, see here.

Below are six sections:

1.) Rogers Cancellation Policy

2.) If you are cancelling a Voice Plan before contract maturity

3.) If you are cancelling a Data add-on before contract maturity

4.) If you are cancelling a Voice and Data Combo Plan before contract maturity

5.) Value Packs and Feature add-ons

6.) Returns and Exchanges Policy

——

1.) Rogers Cancellation Policy

When you sign-up for a contract with Rogers, that contract allows you a promotional price on a device and a promotional plan that is better than a plan without a contract (in terms in minutes). These contracts usually come in 2 or 3 year terms and if they are broken, you pay a fee because you broke a legally binding contract before its maturity.

There are two different cancellation fees when breaking a contract. There is a cancellation fee for the Service Agreement (Early Cancellation Fee; ECF) and a cancellation fee for Data add-ons (Data Early Cancellation Fee; DECF). For example, a $25 Plan that gives you 150 Minutes, Unlimited Evenings and Weekends would be a Voice (or service) Plan (ECF). A plan that gives you 500MB of web browsing would be also be a Service Plan (ECF) and a data add-on that gives you 500MB would be a Data plan (DECF).

Note:

If you have a Voice plan on your account, the Voice Plan of a contract is considered the primary plan of your account. If you cancel the Voice plan, your entire account is cancelled, regardless if you have a Data plan or any other plans/features.

Example 1:

Having a Voice and Data Combo plan and cancelling the voice portion will cancel the entire account. You will be billed both the ECF and DECF.

Example 2:

Having a just a single Voice plan and cancelling it will cancel the entire account. You will be billed the ECF.

Example 3:

Having a Voice plan with a Data plan add-on and cancelling the voice portion will cancel the entire account and you will be billed the ECF and DECF. However in this example, you can cancel just the Data plan and still keep the account active as long as you do not cancel the Voice plan portion and be billed only the DECF.

Example 4:

Having a Data-Only plan (Internet Stick) and cancelling the plan will cancel the entire account. You will be billed $400 (ECF) and $100 (DECF).

Below I will detail the cancellation fees for Rogers:

2.) If you are cancelling a Voice Plan before contract maturity:

A.) Voice Plans Policy

The Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) is the greater of $100 or $20 per month remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $400 (plus taxes) and applies to each phone number that you cancel before maturity.

B.) Voice Plans Subscribed before February 1 2007 Policy

If you are subscribed on a plan before February 1 2007 and have continued to renew that same plan on a 1, 2 or 3 year contracted term, your ECF is $20 times the number of months remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $200.

Examples:

Example A

Voice Plans cancellations

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 25 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 25 months = $500
  • The maximum charge is $400
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $400 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 3 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 3 months = $60
  • The minimum charge is $100
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $100 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 8 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 8 months = $160
  • The minimum charge is $100 and the maximum is $400
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $160 plus taxes

The same formula applies for 1 or 2 year contract terms as well.

Example B

Voice Plans Subscribed before February 1 2007 cancellations

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 25 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 25 months = $500
  • The maximum charge is $200
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $200 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 3 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 3 months = $60
  • There is no minimum charge
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $60 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice plan contract that has 8 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF will be as follows:

  • $20 x 8 months = $160
  • There is no minimum charge and the maximum is $200
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $160 plus taxes

The same formula applies for 1 or 2 year contract terms as well.

3.) If you are cancelling a Data add-on before contract maturity:

A.) Data Plans Policy

The Data Early Cancellation Fee (DECF) is the greater of $25 or $5 per month remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $100 (plus taxes) and applies to each contracted data plan that you cancel before maturity.

Examples:

Example A

Data Plans cancellations

If you have a 3 year data plan contract that has 25 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your DECF will be as follows:

  • $5 x 25 months = $125
  • The maximum charge is be $100
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $100 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year data plan contract that has 3 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your DECF will be as follows:

  • $5 x 3 months = $15
  • The minimum charge is $25
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $25 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year data plan contract that has 8 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your DECF will be as follows:

  • $5 x 8 months = $40
  • The minimum charge is $25 and the maximum is $100
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $40 plus taxes

The same formula applies for 1 or 2 year contract terms as well.

4.) If you are cancelling a Voice and Data Combo Plan before contract maturity:

Both the ECF and DECF are applied together.

Voice Plans Policy

A.) Voice Plans

The Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) is the greater of $100 or $20 per month remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $400 (plus taxes) and applies to each phone number that you cancel before maturity.

B.) Voice Plans Subscribed before February 1 2007

If you are subscribed on a plan from before February 1, 2007 and have continued to renew that same plan on a 1, 2 or 3 year contracted term, your ECF is $20 times the number of months remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $200.

Data Plans Policy

Data Plans

The Data Early Cancellation Fee (DECF) is the greater of $25 or $5 per month remaining in your contracted term to a maximum of $100 (plus taxes) and applies to each contracted data plan that you cancel before maturity.

Examples:

Example A

Voice/Data Plans cancellations

If you have a 3 year voice and data combo plan contract that has 25 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF/DECF will be as follows:

  • Voice Plan portion: $20 x 25 months = $500
  • The maximum charge is $400 for the voice plan portion, so you pay $400 plus taxes.
  • Data Plan portion: $5 x 25 months = $125
  • The maximum charge is $100 for the data plan portion, so you pay $100 plus taxes
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $500 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice and data combo plan contract that has 3 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF/DECF will be as follows:

  • Voice Plan portion: $20 x 3 months = $60
  • The minimum charge is $100 for the voice plan portion, so you pay $100 plus taxes.
  • Data Plan portion: $5 x 3 months = $15
  • The minimum charge is $25 for the data plan portion, so you pay $25 plus taxes
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $125 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice and data combo plan contract that has 8 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF/DECF will be as follows:

  • Voice Plan portion: $20 x 8 months = $160
  • The minimum charge is $100 and the maximum is $400 for the voice plan portion, so you pay $160 plus taxes.
  • Data Plan portion: $5 x 8 months = $40
  • The minimum charge is $25 and the maximum $100 for the data plan portion, so you pay $40 plus taxes
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $200 plus taxes

The same formula applies for 1 or 2 year contract terms as well.

Example B

Voice/Data Plans Subscribed before February 1 2007 cancellations

  • Data Plan portion: $5 x 3 months = $15
  • The minimum charge is $25 for the data plan portion, so you pay $25 plus taxes
  • Total Cancellation Fee: $85 plus taxes

If you have a 3 year voice and data combo plan contract that has 8 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF/DECF will be as follows:

  • Voice Plan portion: $20 x 8 months = $160
  • There is no minimum charge and the maximum is $200 for the voice plan portion, so you pay $160 plus taxes.

5.) Value Packs and Feature add-ons

There are no cancellation fees for any value packs or feature add-ons that are not bound by a contract.

However, any value packs or add-ons that are bound by a contract will have cancellation fees. The only value packs or feature add-ons that come with cancellation fees are value packs or add-ons that include Data plans.

For example:

  • $25 500MB Data Plan (1, 2, 3 year terms)
  • $40 iPhone Data Value Pack (3 year contract only)
  • $15 regular Value Pack (has mobile browsing for consumer phones) (3 year contract only)

Either of the above three packages (among others) will fall under the DECF cancellation policy listed above.

6.) Returns and Exchanges Policy

See here for the Rogers returns and exchanges policy.

Too many examples that im a little confused… LOL
I get the idea that its going to cost LOTS to cancel if u just signed up and have the 3 year data plan, 3 year iPhone contract. You got charges on both of those (Depending how much time is left) and yet a cancellation fee.
So is the price to cancel all this, go through some hassle with Rogers, almost the same as buying out the iPhone 3GS 32 GB?
Plus don't cancel asap in the first month because thats using the system if u try to sign back up and a no contract plan. U will not have the same number for a month and if they allow u to or u have to wait a month or so….
I hope Im understanding this correctly lol

  • That's correct. However, it is only if you are cancelling both the
voice and data plans that it costs as much as an iPhone 3GS outright.

If you only cancel data, then it's only max. $100

  • TK09

HUP ; something I never considered before the upgrade was that adding the extra year onto the contract
did not extend such items as the 6 Gig promo or My 5 + 5 additional…. the last year will be a free for all
in terms or what there is to offer for service pricing.
    Shocked to say the least.

  • bringer666

Most phone companies will waive the cancellation fees if you sign another 2 or 3 year contract, however they usually only do this if you have about 6 months or less left on your current contract.

  • Well if you renew, there is no cancellation fee.
But if you have 6 months left and cancel, you will be billed cancellation fees

  • […] Subscribed before February 1 2007 cancellations

If you have a 3 year voice and data combo plan contract that has 25 months left in the contract term and you cancel, your ECF/DECF will be as follows:

Uhmm, if you got that 3-year plan in February 1 2007, it is NOT possible to have 25 month left in your contract. Your contract will expire at the last on 1 February 2010, so the maximum number of months is 7 and not 25.

  • It's an example.

In order to still have that plan, you would be renewing it anyway.

For example, if you did a hardware upgrade recently on a plan that was
released before February 1 2007. You would renew the plan for another
3 year contract so it is possible to have 25 months left at one point.

But remember the word “example”. You can substitue any number of
months in there that you want.

If you read the post, you will see I have numerous examples.

Please read and understand the entire post before commenting with
    useless backlash.
    šŸ™‚

  • If you renew that plan and keep your original hardware do you still have an ECF and DECF?

  • Ofcourse! Because you are back in a contract. However renewing a plan
and not getting new hardware out of it is most foolish.

  • Sat

So you can have a plan, get a data add-on and get a 3gs, and then cancel it after a month and only have to pay $100 plus taxes. But cant they make you pay extra for the iphone since your not on a data plan anymore? It just seems like they would've thought of this loophole… and I dont want to get caught and end up having a dataplan I dont want.

  • You don't have to wait for a month. You can do it 24 hours later.

It's not really a loophole because you're paying the cancel fee. This
will be “patched” if Rogers increases their data cancellation fee as
    Fido did.

  • Sat

When did fido change their decf? I actually have fido and my sister has rogers and on my contract it says the same as rogers, $5/month , maximum $100

  • It was changed as of July 19. I have a post coming tomorrow all about
    it.

It's only for new/changes plans after July 19

Is there a cancellation fee if I cancel the whole contract within 14days??

  • Ex

No, so long as you are under the minute requirement as well.

  • Gcb_27

Wondering if this would be a possible way to cancel your contract. Can you renew your contract by doing a Hardware upgrade at a rogers plus store, then return the phone the next day, with no used minutes and say you would like to cancel the contract?

  • Wiltonman

if i added the $30 data plan to my voice plan and upgraded to an iphone, will i be able to just cancel the data portion of my plan?

  • Ex

    And pay termination fee.

  • Yogeshrie

    I think rogers is a rip off…
