Great tips iphonefan! I also have a useful tip for everyone:
Download <b>"If found, please..."</b> from the app store (it's free). It allows you to put a banner on your wallpaper that says "If found please call: . You can also add a short message like "or email me at sample@mail.com"
This is very useful especially if a good samaritan finds your iPhone (with a locked password of course) and decides to return your iPhone.

here's my travel tip:

bring along an AirPort Express or other pocket-size WiFi router for use with your iPhone. I always do.

that way you can access the internet in the comfort of your room if you have high-speed ethernet but no free hotel Wi-Fi. (this has my common observation in frequent travels overseas - i.e. more hotels seem to have ethernet rather than wifi in the rooms). This is of course assuming you've turned off data roaming and are trying to avoid cellular data usage while traveling.

Bonus: the AirPort Express has a USB socket which can be used to charge your iPhone - that's one less AC plug to occupy with your gear in your hotel room. AC plugs in hotel rooms always seem scarce.

Bonus+: if more than 1 of you in the room, or even a friend next door or down the hall, then it's easy to share your single ethernet connection. plus you're not tied to the desk, whether laptop or iPhone (or both)

p.s. teddyx's tip above is correct. after turning on airplane mode you can then separately turn WiFi back on.
