Dev Team Says Hold Off 2.2 Firmware Update!

Share:

Last week we talked about the upcoming iPhone 2.2 firmware coming our way on November 21st. As for the actual release date we’ll have to wait to see if it comes true or not. However, since the update has not been released yet the iPhone Dev Team has some interesting news for those eagerly awaiting an iPhone 3G software unlock.

According to their recent blog post the Dev Team has once again reminded folks that if you are interested in having your iPhone 3G unlocked (so you can use your iPhone with ANY GSM carrier worldwide), it’s best if you await their instructions once 2.2 is released by Apple. Here’s what they had to say:

Update warning!

Now for something a bit more serious, we’ve explained about the pros and cons of applying Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device.

This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ straight away on the iPhone 3G using the iTunes auto-updater could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first! Please don’t blindly install the update and then complain about it later 😉

As much as I want my iPhone 3G to be software unlocked so I can use it overseas when traveling, it’s not the end of the world if I jump straight into the 2.2 update because my first gen is still fully unlocked and operational. However, if the iPhone 3G is your primary cellphone you won’t realize how useful an unlocked phone is until you travel overseas or out of the country. It’s painful using any other cellphone after using the iPhone!

Another advantage of having a fully unlocked phone is that you’ll be able to use it with ANY of the new GSM carriers that are set to launch in Canada. We learned that the wireless spectrum bidding was very successful this past summer. Also, Telus and Bell are set to have their own GSM towers up and running in time for the 2010 Olympics. If you want to use your iPhone 3G on these new networks, holding off the 2.2 firmware update might be something worth considering.

Decisions, decisions, right? You’re going to have to decide what your priorities are before you click Update once 2.2 firmware comes out! This might be a time where a little patience will go a long way. Who is going to wait? Who will update right away?

I will wait now that you have posted it since I would like to have the option of unlocking my phone and the 2.2 features aren’t mind blowing for me personally. They missed a lot of features that I wanted.

Can you keep us posted on this?

count me in, I’m more interested in unlocking. Going to Florida for 2 weeks just after Christmas and am hoping to have both our phones unlocked for the trip.

Not so sure that the new networks coming out in 2010 has a lot of impact on weather or not we upgrade to 2.2 now. Somehow I think there is going to be at least an update or 30 before that, most likely even a new iPhone or 2.

Love the site btw, keep up the good work.

I’ll update right away just because I think If I were to travel anytime soon, it’ll only be for a short while and I won’t be bringing my iPhone 3G (it’s too precious!). Hey, has anyone else read about iPods being stolen all over Canada? I hate what this world has become where a person cannot walk freely listening to his/her mp3’s without getting mugged. The police are urging people to purchase cheap headphones to mask your iPods. I say people should urge police to keep our streets safe.

  • Having an all in one device while traveling is crucial! Why carry a cellphone plus iPod when you can bring your IPHONE! 😉 Thanks for commenting on the blog.

  • Yeah I heard about that story. Quite sad that scum of the earth are targeting people with iPods and iPhones. Best tip is to be aware of your surroundings and conceal your device from the open in busy areas.

If you do a hard reformat can you not go back to the original firmware?
