Instagram Introduces Snapchat-Like AR ‘Face Filters’ Feature

Instagram has yet again taken a page from Snapchat‘s book, as now the social media photo app now includes eight different augmented reality face filters for your amusement.

Similar to Snapchat’s filters feature, Instagram is rolling out a new AR feature today called face filters. These work with both the photo and video camera to apply real-time face-tracking filters over subjects.

In a blog post detailing the new additions, the company says that the changes include a few different crowns, a filter that makes a person look like a koala or a rabbit, and another one that places math equations spinning around your head.

“Today, we’re introducing face filters in the camera, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining,” reads the post. “Whether you’re sitting on the couch at home or you’re out and about, you can use face filters to express yourself and have playful conversations with friends.”

The company added a few other creative tools Tuesday, including a “rewind” mode that plays videos in reverse. The app will also add hashtag stickers and a new eraser brush. With the eraser brush users can erase things they’ve drawn and replace it with something else, or play around with color.

For its part, Snapchat recently introduced new AR features including World Lenses that apply effects to shots captured from the rear camera. Instagram says its new features are available in version 10.21 which is already on the App Store.
