Netflix has announced today it has signed a deal with DreamWorks Animation to bring some of the latter’s most well known characters to their streaming library for subscribers in Canada, the USA, Latin America and Europe. This is the largest deal for original content ever signed in Netflix history.
What makes this agreement interesting is it marks the first time DreamWorks Animation and its characters will make its way to television through branded shows, providing exclusive and original content to Netflix.
Over 300 hours of new programming will be available to Netflix subscribers and show will be inspired by hit franchises, upcoming feature films plus the Classic Media library, which DreamWorks acquired last year and contains some of the most popular animated characters in history.
New shows will start airing in 2014 and will debut in all territories where Netflix is available.
“DreamWorks Animation is a valued partner in our global efforts to provide families the most engaging stories delivered however, whenever and wherever they want,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “This deal represents a major expansion of what’s already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets.”
Back in February, Netflix and DreamWorks teamed up to announce the original series F.A.S.T., based on the animated feature film Turbo. The former will debut this December. You can bet once these new shows launch, parents will be hearing it from their kids to access Netflix to watch these new shows.
Netflix continues to add original content to sustain subscribers and most recently debuted the fourth season of the cult comedy Arrested Development.
