Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rooftop Run for iOS [Review]

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have made their debut on the App Store with a good game. Even though mechanically, Roof Run may be simplistic, it’s still fun and challenging.

The Kraang are invading and you need to stay ahead of one of their ships by running across rooftops, and collecting green energy orbs. Once you collect enough orbs to fill the energy bar Turtle Time starts, which is a quick time event where you have to tap the icons to make your TMNT beat up some baddies, also earns you coins. You’ll also encounter enemies from the Foot Clan, Kranng, and Dimension X as you’re running, and when a red target appears around them, you can tap the screen to attack them, and earn some more coins.

Traversing the rooftops and attacking enemies is easy and fluid. However, since jumping and attacking enemies are both achieved by tapping the screen, you’ll occasionally find yourself flying towards an enemy, when you wanted to run across a billboard or jump.

What really bugs me about TMNT: Rooftop Run are the in-app purchases – they don’t make sense! For $0.99 I can buy 3600 coins, but I’ll only get 10500 for $3.99 when, logically, I should get 14400 (3600 x 4). And if I were to buy the $8.99, $14.99 or $19.99 packs I would again be ripped off. Additionally, even though I liked the Turtle Time events, I wish there was more than one animation per enemy type and TMNT. All that aside, I found Rooftop Run to be quite challenging, which continues to be great reason to keep playing, and trying to go farther.
