The Greater Toronto Area is set to get new area codes as of March 25th due to increasing demand for telephone numbers, the Telecommunications Alliance has announced:
Starting March 25, 2013, two new area codes will be introduced in the Greater Toronto Area. In Toronto, the 437 area code will be added to the 416/647 area codes. In the 905/289 region, the 365 area code will be introduced.
The codes will be introduced with the overlay method, meaning they will be added on top of existing area codes and co-exist together:
“These new area codes reflect the growing use of cell phones and other mobile devices. Telecommunications service providers will be able to accommodate the growing demand for new telephone numbers with absolutely no impact on customers,” said Glenn Pilley, Director of the Canadian Numbering Administrator. “We expect the first numbers with the new area codes to be assigned over the coming months as part of a seamless transition process.”
Users may have seen the new area code FAQ posted yesterday to the Rogers website, noting the new area codes were coming.

In the coming months, new area codes will also be introduced in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
