Ottawa Details $12.1 Million in Spending for High Speed Internet This Week

The federal government continues to make announcements on how it is investing to expand high speed internet to underserved areas.

This week, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada made six announcements detailing just over $12.1 million in spending to expand high speed internet to 5,296 households (just over $2,200 per home), with some contributions coming from telecoms as well.

Ontario

• May 28 – over $192,000 in federal funding for Vaughan and East Gwillimbury in partnership with Bell for 113 households
• May 27 – over $700,000 in federal funding for Bancroft, Carrying Place and Mountain View; Cogeco Connexion adding $324,000 and Bell Canada investing $1.7 million; 1,111 households
• May 27 – nearly $3.2 million in federal funding for Thunder Bay by Tbaytel; 689 households in Lappe and Toimela to benefit
• May 26 – over $6 million in federal funding for Bell, Cogeco Connexion and Lakeland Networks; 15 communities in the regions of Clarington, Lake of Bays Township, Leeds and Grenville, Merrickville-Wolford, Northumberland County, Spencerville, Newtonville, Newcastle, West Guilford, Baysville, the Municipality of Dysart et al, and Wasauksing First Nation; 2,374 households to benefit

Quebec

• May 25 – $1.45 million investment for 670 households in Sainte-Clotilde-de-Horton, Sainte-Séraphine and Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil; Maskatel to install

Newfoundland and Labrador

• May 28 – over $196,000 in federal funding to for Northern Peninsula communities of River of Ponds and Hawke’s Bay; Aldera Communications Inc. adding $81,700; 339 households
